It was a nod to our Farragut brothers, their final episode originally having been intended to be already out by now. Unfortunately since it isn't, the line ended up being a possible spoiler....depending on how the final Farragut episode turns out.

Fair enough, but as I said given all the other connect-the-dots references can easily lead one to a different conclusion.
Could have sworn I read someplace (after the guidelines were released) that Farragut would NOT be moving into the movie era after their episode "homecoming" was released?
I read the same thing on Axa-Monitor when all the fan films were making their announcements in light of the guidelines a few months ago.

It's not "romance". It's that need for closeness that people crave when they think they're about to die, like Vasquez and Gorman in Aliens.
It could potentially be romance in light of the supposed romantic feelings between Uhura and Scotty in Star Trek V. This episode did some foreshadowing in other aspects, so I don't think its beyond the pale here to speculate that the Scotty/Uhura scene was a foreshadowing or call out to their interaction in Star Trek V.
Gorman and Vasquez was happening in 'real time', and who's to say that if they hadn't survived the encounter with the aliens that they might not have hooked up, at least once? But in any event, that was 'real time' as opposed to Star Trek Continues which is looking back, from the perch of established Trek history, or rather a good deal of the future for many of the TOS characters has already been written and Star Trek Continues could be seen as working backward as it connects some of the dots.
I personally don't care if it is foreshadowing the relationship or not, however the idea that it could have been-the way it played on the screen and between the actors-is not implausible. I'm perfectly fine with Star Trek Continues or some other fan film taking Uhura's character in a different direction and giving her a rich inner life with romance far beyond the Enterprise, but within the specific context of this episode, and in the general sense of how fan projects-filmed or written-like connecting dots, the set up for a Scotty/Uhura relationship could start here. It might not have been the intention, but that doesn't mean it can't be the interpretation from the audience.

Yeah, but it wouldn't nail the coffin shut. Nothing ever can; that ship sailed almost 50 years ago. Nor should it. People can't learn from the past, if it's buried.
What it would do, though, is offer a vision, one group's vision, a positive vision, of how Starfleet should look. But the vision offered by "Embracing the Winds" is just as valid, and likely far more topical with respect to our present-day challenges regarding sex discrimination.

There was a nice touch in this episode in regard to the boarding party aboard the Hood. First seeing Uhura getting something more to do. And seeing the boarding party wearing Engineering fatigues rather than the usual standard attire, particularly on the female personnel.
The starbase looked nice, too.

I rather like how it adds context / a small arc to the Lolani episode, explaining somewhat why they are trying to avoid a diplomatic incident with the Orions and.. the Tellarites, who bought the slavegirl.
Meh. This episode was really about nothing. We never get any sense of real jeopardy or drama for anyone involved and nothing is resolved.
Rewarching this I was struck by a lot of too cute writing where things need to be explained for the viewer--very TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT like--resulting in characters not talking like real people. TOS rarely had writing like this even in its most disappointing episodes.
And not only was this overly referential to other productions it was referential to other STC episodes--something TOS rarely did. That adds up to a fair bit of cute connect-the-dots dialogue that serves zero purpose in furthering the story.
