State-run health care

^It's interesting that whenever one side or the other is in power, that's the argument that the side out of power makes...
Anyway, what about a sales tax to pay for this, folks? No one gets out of paying it. And the rich would pay the most because they buy the most.

People don't want to pay any extra taxes at all. A .5% increase could do wonders, but no one will vote for any such increase.

I'm all for raising taxes on stuff like soda and junk foods. If you don't want to pay, fine. You don't need that stuff anyway. Americans are fat. Junk food should be more expensive.

Everyone in the US (yes, even the ones that shouldn't be here) have access to medical care via a 1986 law.

Without affordability access is meaningless.

That's like Marie Antoinette saying "let them eat cake". Of course everyone can buy cake theoretically, but if I'm starving and can't even afford bread, that's not bloody likely.

Healthcare costs money? WHO KNEW!!!
Right and if you can't pay for it now and under the health care bill it does get paid for, that means someone who isn't you is paying for it. Pretty basic honey.

Your not asking for help, your forcing other peoples actions for you own benefit.

Curious then how it turns out it'll be cheaper for all of us, though.

Lots of people who don't have cars pay taxes to have the roads maintained. I don't see how this is any different.

This Pelosi bill should alarm every real American.

Btw. I always have to laugh when one of you guys says something like "real Americans" as opposed to apparently fake Americans.

What do actual anti-American people hate most about America, what did al-qaeda think was the most prominent symbol of the USA? Bumfuck, Idaho or the capital of east coast-liberal elitism - New York City, New York?

Last time I checked, I was a "real" American. Probably more real than most here can claim, as my family dates back to the late 1600's, and I have some Native American ancestry (a tiny amount, but it's there). So there. :p

I didn't know that liberals weren't real Americans. Guess I need to move to the ever so socialist Canada! :guffaw:

The same people who don't want to pay taxes are just as unlikely to give to their church or other charity (I've volunteered as a church membership/finance secretary- the richest members ALWAYS give the least. ALWAYS.).

Why oh why does this not suprise me?

Damn right it's unrealistic. No church or charity can deal with the overwhelming costs of medical care- especially if it involves long term treatment. Just one cancer case could wipe out a church's outreach program- and I'm sorry, but there are more programs that need that money first. The food bank, emergency cold shelter, etc.

I've attended my current church for about 2 weeks. I see just how far they stretch what little they have to try to quickly and efficently reach the needs of the community. If the government that's supposed to be leading us and supporting us as its citizens put in half the effort, it would be wonderful. I'm more than happy to pour in money to this church's outreach every chance I get, despite the fact that I myself have very little money to do it with. People who are in a much worse situatio than I am deserve help and I'm willing to put aside whatever little I can.

For the benefit of everyone, a healthy people makes healthy nations.

I agree. My boyfriend got a mild case of the flu about a decade ago while staying in Paris. He always praises the French doctors who took care of him. Would that our own country shared the same dedication to the physical and mental well being of its citizens.

I have been a volunteer for many charity door-knocks over the years and it is the poorer areas that I have collected the most. People in those areas might only give their small change - 50c, $1 or $2 coins - but nearly every household will give and it quickly mounts up. Often the person will apologise for not be able to give more.

When I have been assigned to more affluent neighbourhoods I was frequently given the excuse "I gave at the office" and l left without a donation made.

It is the same for button days. It was the poorer looking people who stop and give me 20c for a sticker and the better dressed would rush by trying to avoid eye contact with me.

Yep, they're the ones who know firsthand what it's like to go without.

But...but....Obama said we won't pay any new taxes....

They're not real Americans in the sense that they seek to controvert and change the founding principles of our nation. Maybe they're AINO's?

    If I said what I really wanted to I'd get another warning. Exactly which founding principles do we want to change?

KM, liberal and proud of it.
