Starz cancels Camelot

Well, we started watching the first ep. My wife's first comment was she thought Arthur was a funny-looking little twit. Then we we realized the episode was 2 hours long and neither of us felt like staying up, I suggested recording it and watching it the next day. My wife said not to bother because she hated Arthur, so what was the point? I agreed.

I'm guessing this show suffered from everyone-watched-Game-of-Thrones-instead-itis

Undoubtedly.

I had the same reaction to Arthur as your wife. Ironically, while it made him annoying to watch for the bulk of the season, it also made his "transormation" at the end all the more ... interesting.

He transformed into something boring. I stopped watching it after the fourth episode because it was boring and very slow. Since it was developed by the guy who created the Tudors and Starz was doing it, I thought it would be Spartacus with great writing, but it turned out to be dull and very predictable. Though I did like the Excalibur episode.

If they can afford it, Starz should get the TV rights to Conan. (Or just do a ripoff, nobody can copyright hulking barbarians.) That would give them an entree into a violent fantasy universe that crosses over into Spartacus' appeal (sweaty musclebound guys vs epic-ly decadent civilization). Leave the wizards and knights to HBO.

There are wizards and knights in Conan.

I was looking forward to watching this on netflix, but now I'll probably not bother. Too bad. I like Eva Green and James Purefoy. Maybe he'll make another Solomon Kane (that's better and closer to the stories) and include a few Eva Green nude scenes.

Nobody is going to notice the wizards and knights when Conan is running around wearing nothing but a loincloth.

Starz needs to have a better understanding of their audience.

For once I find myself in complete agreement with you. Somewhere the universe has cracked.

Starz doesn't have much of an audience anyway... they've got to be a distant third behind HBO and showtime.

Again, amazing how now Camelot talk is jumping about how crappy it was and that no one is suprised by the axe.

Camelot was not billed as being competition to Merlin in airing time, style, sex, drugs, and rock, and roll. In that regard it was supposed to be much more head to head with Game of Thrones, and it just couldn't compete. However, Camelot did shoot itself further in the foot by having an origin young Arthur take that was already also being done better on Merlin.

Eh, the irony today too my husband put it in our Instant Watch queue.

I'm a big fan of the Arthurian stories, but I haven't heard much about this one; it didn't seem to have much of an impact, so I'm not surprised that it was cancelled. A shame though because it touted some impressive, or name, actors at least. One less show to get invested in I suppose.

Perhaps Starz shouldn't try for the dense multilayered political drama like Game of Thrones (mixed with sex and violence) and just go more for the even more overt sex and violence, with only the barest mention of politics like Spartacus. I enjoy both Spartacus and Games.

Despite it's ignomious end, I might buy it when it comes to DVD. Does anyone know if it ended on a cliffhanger? I'm assuming it did since it was only the first season.

It wasn't so much a cliffhanger, actually. It sort of wrapped up "phase I" of the Arthur story up with a pretty tidy little bow, all things considered.

It DID leave me wondering how they were going to deal with the next stage of the legend. But, cliffhanger, not so much.

But they're trying to build an audience by being "HBO, but lots sleazier." It's a good strategy, they just need to pick their shows with more care.

I really wish I were in charge of Starz so I could do two shows I think are no-brainers for them: sword & sorcery with everyone running around half naked; and sexy/scary cyberpunk. If they had two shows like that, I might be tempted to fork out $20/month. :rommie:

You might think that they should do a vampire show. But naw, I think that market has been saturated.

Definitely. They shouldn't try to cater to anyone's intelligence. They should go for well-produced, good looking sleazefests.

i haven't even got around to watching Camelot yet. though i admit, i was going to watch cause i love Eva Green mostly. but, i have always loved the Arthur mythos.

I wonder if Joseph Fiennes would get another show as a lead anytime soon. He doesn't seem able to hold an audience.
