Spock may be old, but he is a genius in his field. If he develops a way to collapse a supernova using Red Matter and he is an experianced pilot, scientist, etc.. It only makes sense for him to go. He's Spock, for f@ck's sake. As far as the big ball of Red Matter, the explanation of it being less stable in small quantities makes enough sense for me.
Ask any fan to explain any "inconsistancy" with an episode or film and you'll get dozens of possible and plausible scenarios...or do we really need everything fully explained and spoonfed to those who think this is all "dumbed down" too much already?? Most normal people and even some fans would get tired of this pretty quickly.

Outside of the same 5-6 people who keep whining about it, the film was accepted and enjoyed by fan and non fan alike.
You can move the goalposts to accommodate your disagreements all you want, but the film was still a hit.

I haven't moved any goal posts. I've been quite consistent with what I find are flaws within this film. The story doesn't stand up to scrutiny and relies on too much coincidence to get where it's going.

It's the "Pro-XI" crowd that whines whenever someone finds fault with "The Masterpiece".

^ Okay, cool it.

Eh, no more so than do the fans of any other particular Trek series or movie, when you get right down to it, and probably a good deal less than some. You might try backing off on the "ridicule the nuTrek apologist" angle and see whether you get different results. :)

So this is okay?

But this isn't?

Okay.

The movie looked pretty and was a really fun time, but of course it had problems. It's by no means the stupid movie people make it out to be, though. It's just not a mind-blowing plot. But it wasn't supposed to be. The plot of this movie is secondary to the forming up of the crew and establishment of their relationship. It was also a tone setting movie. It said "NuTrek is going to be fast and fun and pretty". I'd love to see a slightly more coherent plot in the next movie, but by no means was Trek XI a horribly flawed pile of garbage. It was a really fun 2 hours.

This is true to some extent. Of course, not nearly as true as it is for First Contact and Generations, but no story set in a universe as fundamentally unreal as the Star Trek universe is going to emerge unscathed.

Do these gargantuan "flaws", however, somehow invalidate more than 1200 professional reviews, more than 390M in theatrical revenue, or more than 140M (and counting) in ancillary revenue? Does this unmatched (in Trek) success reveal a massive global conspiracy to pretend a bad movie is actually rather good? All to ridicule hard core trekkies? Decidedly not.

Why, were I to assert such a thing I would come across as just another juvenile crybaby, still affronted (some two years later) at having his favorite canon-based fantasies and daydreams snatched away from him with one fell reboot.

It seems the pro-XI crowd is still unable to have a civilized discussion about this film.

No, I don't believe I said that at all, and you appear to be laboring under the mistaken impression that we're keeping score here.

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to lay all the credit at their feet, if I were you. It takes two to tango, and I'm sure you'll agree that the condescending (even at times insulting) tone found in posts from some of the critical-of-XI "crowd" hasn't been doing a great deal toward elevating the civilized level of discussion in this thread.

Now, I really hate to break up a sniping session not yet in full swing, but I've seen the ending already - I know how it goes, and too often it involves warnings being handed out. I like that prospect even less.
