Started watching this again tonight

So, when I was younger I saw a bit of the first episode, and an episode where there's like this lawsuit between the humans and the bad guys arbitrated by some really powerful but naive aliens, and this episode where the colonel keeps getting killed by what I remember as poison or acid hitting his heart. Anyhoo, I decided to watch SG-1 since there's nothing good on Netflix.

I swear I went into this with an open mind. Here's what I got: opening scene of pilot episode features laughably bad actors being menaced by has-been rapper Sisqo. After the theme there is a short bit where we are reintroduced to O'Neill. We are then treated to a succession of shots showing the characters walking through hallways for no reason, meeting the new general and leaving his office for another office for no reason and then a scene between Kowalski and O'Neill.

At this point the dragging nature of the show and the horrible acting of everyone so far save MacGyver and the general drives my wife to beg me to turn it off. Fortunately there is a new Jim Gaffigan special out now.

I think that I might start up again, but without her around. Can't say that I'm optimistic. Can anyone please tell me what is so great about this show?

It has some pretty good episodes...but, much like TNG, most of those are not to be found within the first season. That being said, the final episodes of the season are quite good, and "The Torment of Tantalus" is a standout for me.

Bashing the pilot of any series isn't very sporting, IMO.

Yeah, get through season 1 as fast as you can. However DO NOT WATCH Emancipation. Just don't. Save yourself that. Skip it, it is a standalone episode and adds nothing to the season arc.

Forgot to mention the dead Jaffa on the autopsy table. Most luscious moobs I've ever seen. Also, I could not get over the fact that they just don't turn the stargate face down.

Oh, dear. You tried to watch Children of the Gods? That was your first mistake. Don't bother with it or Emancipation. Season 1 is pretty lame, but the show does get better. I promise.

I thought "Children of the Gods" was amazing the first time I saw it, and I managed to blow through the first 5 seasons in a matter of weeks. Never had a problem with the acting, though I agree the Jaffa are pretty silly and over-the-top. Overall, though, Stargate is one of my favorite shows.

Just tipping it over like the Egyptians had done before the movie. I mean, the gummint wasn't interested in going through it again, but they left it up in case someone else wanted to come through?

Otherwise there would be no tv show.

Why do Enterprise keep flying in space when they meet so many bad guys? Just stay home and out of trouble instead.

Tipping it over wouldn't stop an incoming wormhole, it would have had to be buried. At the time, they hadn't decided what they wanted to do, plus they're inside a military base inside a mountain.

Plus as is pointed out at some points, the bad guys also have spaceships. Burying the gate won't stop them from getting to Earth...going out looking for assistance makes a lot more sense than sitting around waiting for it to find you.

No. The only thing stopping them from getting to earth is the fact that Carter's reproductive organs are in the INSIDE and not on the outside.

At the time they thought the Stargate only connected to Abydos, and O'Neill claimed to have detonated a nuke on that end. No one was expecting anyone to come through the gate.

They actually knew that it went to the "Heliopolis" planet from Torment of Tantalus. The government did anyway, I suppose that would explain why they kept it around.

Was it made explicitly clear that anyone involved with the Stargate program knew about the Heliopolis incident? I was under the impression that it had essentially been forgotten about...which granted seems a little strange, but then, I believe they also didn't know it was actually a means of transportation at the time.

Everything you just trashed. Don't bother with any more of it, because that's what you get for ten seasons. It had enough fans without adding you.

SG-1 was never "Must-See" TV for me, but, while there were very few episodes that scored a 10 from me, there were also very few that earned less than a 7 or 8.

So, IMHO, though rarely incredible, it was consistently entertaining and I never felt like I wanted that hour of my life back after watching it.

I'm almost done with ST:Voyager rewatch (I missed alot during first run), and when I finish with it, I plan to start a full rewatch of SG-1

There are two things about Stargate SG-1 you have to understand and accept to properly assess the quality of the writing.

First, the von Daenikenite premises are crackpot lunacy and there is no legitimate way to take this seriously. You want to Take Nonsense Seriously, you watch DS9 or the new BSG, but Stargate SG-1 is pretty much always aware that the premises are pants.

Second, the show is action/comedy. Yes, there are a few dramas squirreled into the nut pile, but by and large it is a comedy. I'm found of summarizing it as "We came, we snarked, we conquered!"

As to whether you'll like Stargate SG-1, if you don't have a sense of humor, you won't. This is especially true if you don't enjoy Richard Dean Anderson cracking wise.

As far as writing quality goes, Stargate SG-1 is consistently superior action/comedy.
