Starships

Does anyone think warp drive is possible, if yes when will we achieve it, do you think some one like Zefram Cochrane will just invent it. Will we be traveling in fleets of starships in a few hundred years?

I'm kind of hoping it won't take hundreds of years. Really.

Same here.
Just about anything is possible. Just over a hundred years ago airplanes were just about a myth.
Rockets were just about a myth as well several decades ago. Some sort of "warp" drive should be possible. I hope to see it in my time.

I hope so but I am doubtful. They haven't even developed hand held communication devices that people can use to contact one another. :vulcan:
;)

Arthur C. Clarke once wrote (and I may be paraphrasing), "If intelligent people say something is possible, they are probably right. If intelligent people say something is impossible, they are most assuredly wrong."

Yeah and then you get those intelligent men that say travelling to the Moon and beyond will one day be possible but get treated as being crazy and possibly thrown in a nut house.

Don't you just love society sometimes.

Honsetly i believe we already have it. I think we ahve built it from reverse engineered alien spacecraft or possibly traded it. So what? Call me a UFO nut. I've never actually seen one though.

To Stag: Sure they have, teenagers have them, I'll bet that members of this forum have them, it's called the cell phone!

Not exactly true.

Airplanes had not been invented, but humans could observe countless things capable of flight.

Technically, what airplanes achieved was mastering "heavier than air, controlled, powered flight"

Likewise, rockets had been used for thousands of years.

On the other hand, we have no known instances today of having observed anything traveling faster than light.

All I know for certain is that people who say "that's impossible" tend to sound foolish sooner or later.

WHAT?!?! What is this 'cell phone' of which you speak? Is it only available in jail?? Is it made of Cellophane?? ;):vulcan:

If you did claim to have seen one I think people might be more willing to call you a "UFO nut".

I think we'll spend the next 500 years fiddling around our solar system and the nearby stars before our science advances to the point of actually warping space or jumping into hyperspace or insta-teleporting anywhere.:(

No aliens. They went extinct 2 billion years ago and won't pop up again for another 600 million. Unless you hop to just past the other side if the galactic core where you'll find a bunch of them with brains the size of aircraft carriers who'd see us as wretched vermin best left to die out by our own devices or lack thereof.

...God, I'm a Trekkie.
