Starships

Of the starship classes known in TNG, DS9 & Voyager era Starfleet, which had the least number of ships?
Thank You!

JDW

Are you interested only in on-screen ships, or ship classes that were named in the Star Trek Encyclopedia too? I'm reasonably sure there are easily a dozen classes that only have one or two ships each if you include the Encyclopedia's listings.

Well I had a look at Memory Alpha's list here as they are pretty good about weeding out what is a legitimate reference and what is not. I started to make a list until I realized that it would probably be easier to list the ships that had more than three or four that we knew of! Strange, isn't it?

Ships that we've seen or heard of more than about four of (off the top of my head):

Akira
Ambassador
Constellation
Constitution*
Danube
Defiant
Excelsior
Galaxy
Miranda
Nova
Oberth

So anything else, we've only seen or heard of a few of.

Dauntless class. Since it turned out it wasn't even a Starfleet ship, it turns out the number of ships in the class is exactly zero.:vulcan:

Wells class? There might be only one. Maybe not.

And, at the time we saw it, there was only one of the Prometheus class.

Yeah, I think Prometheus is maybe the single one that we're pretty sure that there's only one of, and not have to wonder if there are a few lurking off-screen someplace.

The Intrepid was shown only in Voyager and DS9's Inter Arma Enim Leges, and I think the Intrepid herself was listed as part of the Starfleet task force that was to meet up with the 1701E. That would make 3 Intrepid class ships.

The Prometheus could be as many as 2, the one in Voyagers End Game was never named.

We only saw one Sovereign, Norway, Raven type, Centaur type, Raging Queen type, and Curry type as well.

Actually, Dauntless wasni a Starfleet vessel, I can't remember who the builder was bur, his plan to see the Voyager crew captured by the Borg almost worked!

James

I am thinking it was probably the Intrepid class, at least at the start of ST: Voyager. Rick Sternbach and Mike Okuda wrote a little technical briefing for the ST: Voyager staff writers and it mentioned that four Intrepid class starships were in service at the time of ST: Voyager.

Does anybody know how many Constellation class ships were built? Read somewhere once that not many of these ships were built!

James

There was one in Endgame (same as Message in a Bottle?) and then a Prometheus faaaar into the future (29th Century) in Azati Prime, ensuring a looooong lifespan for at least the ship design.

I believe that battle also showed us a Dauntless-class ship, so Starfleet eventually looked over the specs of it from Voyager's database.

Q: Is there any mention of Dauntless-class being developed in any of the novels post-Endgame?

Considering that this happened during a time travel event, we might think that the use of those ship models was to suggest some sort of cross-time battle, or because no one thought we would figure out which ones they were. Even aside from how unlikely it is that such old ships would have been of any use at that time, it's probably easier to dismiss what they actually looked like than to figure out why exactly a 22nd-century Vissian or 24th-century Devore ship would have been in the fight on the other side.

It certainly seems hard to believe that Starfleet would have built a ship to closely match the alien illusion Dauntless.
