Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Some of the civilian outfits looked really goofy in the Berman era.

Some of the early TNG uniforms were a little bit too tight.

But the ships looked good for it's time.
Yeah, she's not a fan of spaceships. Star Wars is about the extent of it.

So, yeah that's her thing. Saying "Oh, they look good for the time" sells about as well as pork chops at a Hannukah dinner.

Did they attach for Warp previously? I only remember it for a spore drive jump.

Yes

Further to this, a plot point in the season three finale is the Discovery crew trying to explosively de-attach a nacelle to force the ship out of warp:

Maybe that's why they modified the ship to have Nacelles have independent power generation by the end of the last season?

There could've been more than 1x refit in between season 3 and 4

Jeeze, I have no recollection of that at all.

Some of the early TNG uniforms were a little bit too tight.
I remember an interview with either Frakes or Burton saying the later TNG uniforms were tight as well (particularly around the waist and shoulders), but they had the benefit of not being one-piece so they had a little more give. Except for the women's uniforms--they were really body-hugging catsuits, but disguised in the Starfleet motif.

That's why I prefere the looser fitting Dominion War era and Voyager Uniforms with alot more give.

Those were far looser on the body.

The VOY uniforms were said to be even worse. Robert Beltran hated them because of how uncomfortable they were around the neck and shoulders (due to the trouser boot stirrups tugging on them) and Garrett Wang routinely experienced "atomic wedgies" whenever he sat down and had split the uniform more than a few times. It was definitely a case of the uniform meant to look good on TV more so than to be actually comfortable to wear.

How is it that the Costuming Departments can't design a uniform that is "Comfortable to Wear" while looking good on screen?

I think it's because any one piece costume (TNG S1-2, early DS9 & VOY, ENT, etc.) would look sloppy as heck on TV if not fitted uncomfortably tight.

They would have to make things more baggy and loose-fitting, The TNG era favored more sleek uniforms, which immediately throws comfort out the window. Not even the uniforms in ENT were all that comfortable to wear, IIRC, because they followed the same philosophy--just with more pockets.

The uniforms from the Battlestar Galactica reboot are probably the closest to stuff that could be comfortable to wear because they weren't designed to be so snug in the first place.

Yep. Ron Moore wanted the designs to be similar in functionality to modern-day flight suits and military BDU’s, which are pretty damn comfortable to wear. The new ones the services use these days look like they fit like pajamas, actually.

This is one design I prefer:

I'll forever remain fond of this design that came outta the design contest for the Enterprise-F. I love the retro styling of the neck and long, swept back pylons and nacelles. It looks like an Enterprise.
That's really nice. Probably needs a tiny bit of tweaking as concepts often do but it's a nice ship.
