Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

A case could be made that--as the Federation flagship--the Enterprise was somewhat atypical of other Galaxy-class vessels, and most of her first seven or eight years were spent conducting representative missions close to home.
That's pretty good reasoning, in TNG they tended to act as Team Federation Space Police more than deep space explorers. If they had stuck to the original premise, TNG should have been more like Voyager, where everyplace and everyone was brand new, just much closer to home.

Well...exploration doesn't always mean going outside of Federation space or whatever, iMO, it could also be investigating anything unknown or out of the ordinary, be it in uncharted territory or within the core Federation sectors. The Enterprise-D did investigate a lot of mysterious things during her time and made a number of discoveries, even if the ship could easily return to Earth in any given episode at times. Some of those discoveries pertained to Federation defense or domestic issues.

Obviously, with future knowledge, Galaxy-class wasn't the Apex of size in terms of USS Enterprise ships or StarFleet. We know that a "Universe class" will eventually come, and it will be MASSIVE.

Do we though? We know that Archer encountered a Universe-class starship named the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-J when transported to his relative future to the 26th Century, but we don't know that the 26th Century he encountered is the Prime Timeline's 26th Century. It's just as possible that the events of the 2500s may play out differently.

In fact, given that we're already at the Enterprise-G in 2402, that leaves us with only the Enterprise-H and Enterprise-I to fill up the interm roughly 100-150 years until the future Archer saw. I think there's a decent chance that the Universe class and/or the Enterprise-J don't happen in the Prime Timeline, at least not the versions Archer saw.

If it was me, the Enterprise-J Universe-class that we saw bits of, would be heavily modified and called the SuperCluster-class =D

A MUCH larger Universe Class would get made in it's place that is drastically different in shape & size.

Kind of like what the Sampson Class would turn out to be:

Nice idea, annoys me greatly that the cargo modules are not uniform.

Yeah, that was discussed up thread as being even odds.

Blame John Eaves for not wanting Uniform Cargo Modules.
I took one of his larger modules and made them uniform with the "Triangular" end caps functioning as mobile modular power units to help with Warp Field Integrity and provide power for the modules.

Those Trapezoidal Modules are HUGE, a great starting point for any Romulan refugee running away from a SuperNova that is about to obliterate their Home World/Star System.

Well.. We don't know when the J was commissioned. It may have been in service for decades by the time of the Archer visit.
They may have also just said.. Enough, were retiring Enterprise for a few decades .
There wasn't one for 85 years from NX to Tos.
Then another 20 year gap from c-d.
But as said, another timeline so it may be sooner that the J shows up.

The Sovereign seems more like a replacement for the Excelsior as a mutli-role cruiser, rather than the premier explorer vessel.

Starfleet seems to have churned them out, given the numbers we see in Picard.

I want to say thats the gist of what the backstory on the Enterprise-E cutaway poster said..it was supposed to be a flexible multirole enhanced defense cruiser meant to fill the role the old Constitution and Excelsior classes filled.

Then the Enterprise-E got wrecked so bad that it was lost or not recoverable/repair-able.

And it wasn't Worf's fault as to why that happened, according to Worf.

=D

If it will be a series, I go with length of the series with a door open to more adventures. If it's a movie, probably up to the second act.
They really need to slow down destroying or decommissioning ships named Enterprise. If I was an Ensign on the G I would be paranoid as hell that there was an enemy starship behind every moon
.. Just waiting to gun us down.
