Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

The use of the STO assets was purely a budgetary reason. And a correct one, in my opinion. Generic far background ships don’t have to be as detailed or well-designed, because they’re not meant to be seen up close; they’re just padding. It’s no different from when DS9’s later seasons used model kits as far background ships because they no longer had access to the original filming models.

Indeed, STO's newer models are approaching mid-to-late '90s TV CG standards. I suppose the heavily-optimized texturing would also make them a lot easier to convert to being screen-ready than the more-detailed Eaglemoss CG library.

I for one am glad they are using the Odyssey Class from STO. Its well-designed (a lot better than the awful Inquiry Class IMHO) and actually looks modern and advanced in comparison with the modified FASA designs on show.

Heck their models are better quality than the Sabre/Steamrunner/Norway models from First Contact and DS9.

But that's not saying much... They weren't meant to be seen up close.

What's the design logic behind that one? A TOS Movie Era version of the Akira or the old NX-class? I like it.

TMP-era version of the Akira. The name comes from Ghost in the Shell, as a deliberate nod to the origin of the Akira's name coming from the eponymous manga and anime.

From the artist himself: "It started as an exercise to see if I could take an existing Star Trek design, in this case the Akira Class, designed originally by Alex Yeager, to a different era in Star Trek, in this case the Movie era design language established in The Motion Picture and the following movies."

Isn't that based on Diogo Vincenzi's Kusanagi-class? (An incredibly pretty starship in my opinion.)

They mentioned on their livestream this version too. The reason for doing their own TMP-era version is that they'd already had two 25th century designs, and this timeframe was the only one they didn't have one from. The name of the class 'Matsumoto' was for Leiji Matsumoto; the creator of 'Space Battleship Yamato', who died not long ago.
