Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

That is...odd.
If it is some kind of carrier and the launch is out the back, I can make a case, but otherwise, that is just strange looking.

Guess Stargazer Nacelles are the flavor of the month.
Honestly, I can't think of a reason for a rear facing deflector, from what its "Supposed" to do, which is act like a broom infront of the ship and sweep out chunks and space dust etc. Unless it spends alot of time in reverse, I don't see any reason for it, save for a "Main Deflector Weapon" which was hap hazard in BOBW..

So this ship is named the Intrepid? Does this mean that the Intrepid class Intrepid (the class of the Voyager) has been decommissioned? Seems like an awfully short time to name a new ship the Intrepid when there’s a whole class called the Intrepid that isn’t all that old. Or is this supposed to be a ‘refit’ of the Intrepid class, lol?

That's my understanding of it too, which is why I could MAYBE make a case for it if what we see is a secondary dish of some sort to scan/clear the area for mass fighter/drone launches.

Actually, the Star Trek Online Pioneer class (seen in the end credits as being in the Starfleet Museum) also has the exact same shape as this ship, and has a backward-facing deflector, just TOS-ified. That’s presumably where the idea for this ship came from.
The STO Pioneer Class has front and rear facing deflectors from what I can see.

Not without precedent - the Saber-class USS Yeager was in service at the same time the entirely different Yaeger class was out there, whose class ship-of-the-line was also USS Yeager. Stupid thing to do, I know, but still...

Idk ask Frans Joseph. Ge didn’t design this obviously but he did design ships that did
The "deflector" dish is a retcon. The Enterprise's dish was labeled "main sensor" on Jeffries' diagram in TMoST.

Joseph's technical manual labels both large dishes on the Dreadnought as main sensors, and having a secondary sensor dish facing rearward does make sense for a dedicated warship.

Considering how often they used the main dish to spray out random particles-of-the-week on Berman-era Trek, I suppose having another facing rearward would have some utility, or maybe it's a sensor dish, lol.
