Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

just realised the Nova's shuttlebay is open.
It isn’t. It’s just weird lighting. There’s no depth to it, so I’m pretty sure that’s the door we’re seeing.

Though interestingly, looking at renders of the Voyager used model online, there doesn’t appear to be a door. All renders of the screen used model depict the shuttle bay as a completely black void. Even on the Rhode Island, the renders in the Eaglemoss book, and screen caps from the actual episode.

For anyone who plays Star Trek Online, the saucer on their 25th century take on the Walker Class was based off the first image concept.

Probably why they chopped the sides off the saucer, to make it look not so FJB-ish.

I am curious if the Schnaubelt estate ever settled the feud with CBS. IIRC, there was a bit of a dust-up back in Disco’s first season when a version of his two-faced Federation logo made an appearance (allegedly without permission) which then subsequently disappeared quickly thereafter, never to be seen again.

It also shows up in S2 New Eden

I think it was a coincidence that it was replaced in the later half of the season. The logo that replaced it shows up on a piece of concept art for the final episode that is dated a week before season 1 even aired.

So I don’t think it was replaced because of the estate getting upset. It was always going to be replaced. Then someone in season 2 goofed and reused it.

I think the version we got with less saucer makes sense.

It's tug, why would it need all those quarters and space? Plus I believe it was said to be have been mass produced, so less ship might equal faster building time.

I prefer the final John Eaves concept over what the VFX team built, but the one in the show I think is fine for what it is. (though I wish they kept the original nacelle bussards)

TBH, the version in S2 of DSC was so out of focus, it damn well could have been a straight Ptolemy. The outline was right.

Was there a drawing of that one, or is it assumed to be the same as the PIC tugs?

It was a kitbash of different DSC ships. There was a clear shot of the front of it in the Picard Mars Short Trek.

It didn't have a class name, but CBS allowed Eaglemoss to name it, and they called it Helios Class.

Why do I get the feeling that the Sampson Class Tow & Tug was the equivalent of StarFleet's version of mass produced "Big Rig Truck" equivalent Small StarShip.

Bigger than a RunAbout, smaller than even the smallest StarShip, able to tow large volumes of cargo in standardized Cargo boxes.

Operated by a small crew of a dozen folks at best.

Wallenberg was the class name they went for the final design in the show, but yeah a large number were produced specifically for the Romulan rescue mission.

Sounds perfect.

According to the background information in the Eaglemoss model booklet (via Memory-Alpha), the tugs were originally designed for the show as evacuation ships for Mars itself, back when the story had the Romulans attacking Mars directly.

He designed the ship to be combat capable if necessary, but the weapon emplacements were lost when they decided to remove the saucer parts.
