Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Sisko's closest confidante and best friend in DS9 was Dax and she was both science officer and later counselor. Closest shoulder to lean upon and get advice from doesn't always have to be first officer or someone with the rank of Commander.
Agreed. And Janeway's closest confidante and best friend in VOY was her coffee machine. Because her first officer was a cardboard cutout

Even in ENT T'Pol wasn't Archer's best friend and closest confidante. Trip held that distinction until he died.

As the admiral in charge of the entire fleet, Picard would have to be free to look at the bigger picture. He wouldn't be the one ordering his ship's helmsman when to push the button.

This is the way it should've played in the book, but it didn't. Picard sat in the Verity captain's chair and used the bridge Ready Room. We actually didn't meet anyone actually assigned to the Verity, IIRC.

But I though the book offered a compelling story, so I didn't knock it for it.

Sounds like the book and the comic were on the same page trying to fit Picard and Raffi in the traditional captain/first officer roles, but zero indication of that onscreen, either in-story or behind the scenes.

True but that would depend on how stretched Starfleet is after the war.

In which case the fallout from the plan being abandoned must have had wide reaching consequences within the Federation and Starfleet.

Highly likely some factions were very pleased with the plan going the way of the dodo.

I think that's the biggest thing. The fallout from the war, and various other incursions would be building up and up on the Federation. How much is too much is a legitimate question to explore.

If the U.S. Navy lost half of more of its surface combat fleet along with a lot of its submarine fleet it would still be rebuilding a decade or two later and I imagine the Naval Command and Joint Chiefs of Staff would be walking on eggshells the entire time as they try to rebuild the Navy. Add millions of American civilian casualties into the mix and this country and her armed forces would be pretty paranoid about a lot of things just ten to twenty years or so after one of the worst conflicts in history.

So I've heard that they actually have a set built for the entire interior of La Sirena, correct? If so, when are we getting some official deck plans? Even a sketch would be enlightening.

Picard was a flag officer then, so things would have worked a little differently. His flagship could have had its own captain and first officer; and all onscreen indications are that Raffi was his aide. I don't like the Verity thing much because it seems to be trying to squeeze people who are supposed to be in different positions into an expected Trek box.
There's an attempt to try and map it out graphically in the LA SIRENA thread by a poster.

No, ‘Desperate Hours’ was a prequel to Season 1 that featured the Enterprise, which is completely contradicted by Season 2.

‘Enterprise War’ was the Season 2 tie in that took place on the Enterprise during Season 1. So far there isn’t any major contradictions to it that I can think of.
No, it was a tie-in to season 1. It was the first Disco novel, and shows the Shenzhou on a mission with the Enterprise a couple of years before the pilot.

It was apparently from an idea from Bryan Fuller.
So it is as I thought. The tie-in stuff that was written post-Fuller and post-S1, but together with S2 fits. The non-tie-in stuff that had no connection was later contradicted. There we have the different levels. PIC Countdown and LBH are tie-ins that were written with the PIC show, so they're like "Enterprise War" and not like "Desperate Hours", which is like all the other novels in the litverse.

It doesn’t, I gave an example earlier.

All the DSC novels released so far have been tie-ins, so that includes “Desperate Hours“. Depending on when they were written depends on how accurate to the final product they are. It also depends on how much advanced info the writers room wants to reveal to the author.

For example, the writer of “Fear Itself” was given the Season 2 names for Saru’s homeworld and their predator the ‘Ba’ul’, but the way the Ba’ul are described to act in the novel doesn’t match the show at all.

Well, she does contact him to inform him about the Synth attack while he's on Vashti. The feeling of the scene is of a First Officer calling down to the Captain/Admiral and having him beam back up immediately. They've made a lot of noise about her being Starfleet intelligence, but if I was conducting a mission to help an unreliable and backstabbing former foe, I'd want to have someone in the know close to my side. Maybe she got a promotion for this mission.

Somebody from the ship might be concerned with how the away team was faring - but the Admiral's factual aide might still be the one to relay these mission-crucial news to him, bypassing the ship's personnel.

We have a nice precedent from "Coming of Age" with the lowly Lieutenant Commander Remmick tagging along with Admiral Quinn, on shady business and with unclear jurisdiction and credentials that actually distance him from the Admiral. No doubt both Quinn and Picard would have an entourage involving people of all ranks, up to Captain - but also these special confidantes, specific to the mission at hand (Quinn's secret anti-conspiracy campaign, Picard's unpopular evacuation management agenda) and necessarily dancing around some of the official hierarchy.

Personally, I'd hate to get either the Musiker-was-Picard's-XO angle or the Verity-was-Picard's-command-or-even-existed one. Neither is directly contradicted yet, but the former makes so little sense, and the latter does jar with the reporter's mention that Picard went straight from an Enterprise to the rescue coordinator job.

Sadly, no. Looked like a blur for most of its short time onscreen. I’m sure Eaglemoss will make a model of it someday.

I don't care. The Excelsior class would have been around for more than 110 years by that time, Miranda class ships are even older.
