It was really cool to see such a great update of a TOS design. In this instance an old ship also makes a sense, it was a pirate using an ancient relic. And considering that La Sirena is basically a bit larger than average runabout, it had to be that; against a modern starship they would have been totally fucked.

On rewatching 1x04 I just realized that the pirate BOP is hardly destroyed. It managed to kill Seven’s ship after its wing was torn off. So it probably still has power. I wonder if we’ll see that ship again after it managed to limp back to its base?

Yes. Basically the only good thing in those films. I like when the warp looks a bit weird.

That'll buff right out. We may see her again, they seem to be running around that part of space.

If you like goofy caricatures, I guess. Anyway, not the point. Warp effect was good. The mere star streaks are pretty plain, and never made sense anyway, you wouldn't pass by so many stars so fast.

Maybe the BOP in TOS was testing the cloak,plasma weapon, and singularity drive?

Isn't it said the Romulan BoP doesn't have warp capabilities? Could very well explain the refit of the warp nacelles. The "new" BoP also seems to have upgraded impulse engines at the back of the main hull.
In my head canon, the Romulan BoP is being produced in several sizes (much like the Klingon BoP is supposed to be), as a scout, cruiser, battleship etc. as this design seemed very popular and was the backbone of the romulan fleet.

It would be hard for the BOP to get from Romulan space to the other side of the Neutral Zone with out some sort of Warp power. Or fight the Enterprise.

I hope folks realize that the Romulan BOP was NOT being commanded by Romulan's.

We don't know that. It was said to belong to a warlord. Lacking contradictory information, I'd assume it was meant to be a Romulan warlord...part of the fragmentation of the empire.

the novelization is really quite terrible.

It's funny, I actually saw a copy of the TMP novelisation 40th anniversary edition and was going to get it until a i heard a voice in my heard telling me not to get it. It was like thousands of Trekkies all cried out at once....

I did however get a copy of the Fifty year mission: the next 25 years instead.

While I assume the Romulan Bird of Prey is a crusty old antique from the TOS era, I recall Nero had one or two ships of that design parked inside the Narada and he was from 2387.

I liked the suggestion that the Romulan Warbird was a TMP or later era variant.
