Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Was there a clear shot of the painted Bird-of-Prey on her underbelly? It looked like it might have been a good replica of the TOS ship's bird only with more hull detailing and texture.

This is the first time since 1966 we've gotten that unless you count the TOS-Remastered edit of "Balance of Terror." Even ENT's 22nd century Bird-of-Preys didn't have painted birds on their underbellies thanks to the producers asking for them to be removed from the digital models before that particular episode aired.

Well no matter what...someone is going to be upset

I think upset is a strong word. I've never been truly upset with any of this, beyond having to pay to watch Discovery, that is primarily because it is so dull and uninspired from my POV. Even then it is only $11 a month, and my mother-in-law gets a lot of mileage out of the service.

Yeah, Discovery is disappointing. At the same time, I'm near fifty and been a fan all my life and am giddy that I'm still getting new Star Trek. Sometimes you can win and lose at the same time. Such is life.

I was more so referring to the people who act like the fact that the Enterprise isn't a 6 foot model in front of a blue screen makes everything an abomination.

What was the book that had a private military force that had acquired an old Constitution class and refitted it with modern weapons?

That'd be kind of funky to see.

Just want to chime in that that was brilliant use of a TOS warbird.

In the course of four episodes, this series has dramatically expanded the Romulan mythology all while deftly tying it in to existing continuity.

It's reflective of the approach DSC took in Season 2 with the Klingons: some retconning, some updating, some adapting, but overall more reverent to precedent.

1) Engineers have been using the golden ratio since the Parthenon. It's also in just about every introductory textbook on art written since the Renaissance. The suggestion that Jeffries wouldn't be aware of it is insane.

Which is why I wasn't suggesting anything of the sort. I just said he made zero use of it when drawing the TOS ship. Just like he would make zero use of it if asked to draw an aircraft. It's not a useful engineering tool at all, in the sense of making things hydrodynamically or mechanically or thermally advantageous, but mere numerological mumbo-jumbo. Deriving its use here from "Matt Jeffries must have known about it" is inane; you could just as well say he must have chosen the registry from the Fibonacci series because he'd be aware of it.

2) Equally groundless is the assertion it isn't present in the design of the Enterprise. The linked article demonstrates ample evidence of that. Both major elements and minor details conform to it.

Except they don't. The double-cross grid used by the writer is just that - a double-cross intended to make it appear as if the ratio applied. A single-cross grid might help make the case. This nonsense does not.

Although, as said, just draw those double-crosses atop the JJPrise and you get the same "evidence" for the elegant way the secondary hull juts from under the saucer in a suggestive "ratio". There are no design differences from the directions where the writer pretends the ratio applies.

Someone asked if the BOP has an eagle painted on the bottom.

We don't get a great look, but it appears so;
