Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

I haven’t seen Picard yet, buuut deep down I am hoping we get to see an Enterprise 1701-F somehow - and that it will be a new design not previously seen...

my guilty pleasure... :adore:

Would be a waste to give us a new design for the F.

I do like the F but it would have to be a decade before STO timeline to do it.

Instead they could just go in a different direction, perhaps the events on Mars all those years ago mean that the F is developed early or fast tracked.

Its not impossible that the Star exploding changed things in the PU compared to what would have happened without the destruction of the Star and attack on Mars, those two events (the latter especially) would be more than enough to change timescales and ship design doctrine.

It would certainly be an ideal opportunity to unveil the new Ship and maybe even turn it into a spin off.

They could use the F or create a new ship I dont really mind either way.

@thribs made a great point in the Picards Dreams thread, we still dont know if the events on Discovery will be connected to Picard, as long as Burnham has that suit she can go pretty much anywhere and anytime.

If they insist on an F, I hope it’s because the E is decommissioned, rather than destroyed, for a change. Ultimately, I just hope we see some real, post-Nemesis ships of the line. I’m sure they’ll ignore STO, though, because they don’t want to navigate the complex legal issues there. So all designs will be pre-STO or completely new.

Not sure there would be any legal issues. All the IP used in STO is likely owned by CBS defacto. If the latter wants to use any elements from the former, I suspect they would be within their rights to do so.

That's never quite so simple. Just because CBS has the right to use some particular IP doesn't mean they just can. Just assigning proper attribution can be a difficult process that they may not want to go through with.

The Enterprise-F design used in STO belongs completely to CBS, that was one of the main rules laid out in the contest that it came from.
(as a matter of fact, ALL the entries became the property of CBS once submitted)

All of the ships designs used in STO also belong to CBS, again, that is how the licencing agreement is set up.

This is also the reason why STO (and DISCOVERY) has been told that they can't use any of the Franz Joseph TOS Tech Manual Designs.
CBS refuses to negotiate to pay royalties to the Estate.

And to go along with that, if CBS doesn’t use the Odyssey class as the Enterprise-F in STP, it won’t be because there’s an issue with them using it. It would simply be because they don’t want to.

Again, I'm not arguing about ownership, royalties, or anything similar. This has been discussed a lot; Trekyards has quite a bit about it. The problem is practical. CBS owns the design, but it needs to create the actual CG models, which need to be of sufficient quality and resolution for the show. The ones used in STO very likely are not sufficient, and even if they were, CBS may not actually own them. CBS will need to find reference media to make its models, and again, it may not own that particular media, even if that media uses models based on CBS's designs.

Who said CBS would actually use the same assets as STO? If they want an Odyssey class ship in STP, STP’s VFX team will make a new CGI model of it, because CBS owns the design. And also, don’t be surprised if an Eaglemoss model of the Titan shows up as set decoration in the Rikers’ home.

Not all, they don't own the Vesta class, that's still owned by Mark Rademaker. Which is probably why you can't have it 3D printed

They own all the variants of the design Cryptic designed however.

I like the Enterprise-F a lot more than I once did. I used to hate it with a passion. I would like to see it used in PIC. But if I don't it won't be that big a deal.
