Starscape's Art Challenge Thread

I don't normally develop my sketches this far before going to vector/ink, but I started to have fun with this one:

It seems to me the Caitains would gravitate towards stories of a whiskered being who enters homes as he pleases and eats offerings of milk and biscuits... the mythical Santa Claws. ;)

Now, that I weight up all the evidence are we sure ol' Santa isn't a cat??? :vulcan:

Happy New Year, everyone! :bolian:

Is this your final entry?

Reminds me of Puss in Boots' Christmas story from Shrek The Halls (but ferocious-er)

Inspired, @Starscape! "Santa Claws" :rommie:

Have you thought of or tried adding a couple of small glints of light in the hood to suggest eyes? It might be a bit much though, I suppose, and spoil the already sinister effect?

Cool, I'd totally forgotten about that... at least, conciously.

Thanks, @Cyfa. The thought of adding glimmer of eyes under the hood did cross my mind very quickly then got it lost. I needed to do a couple of tweaks anyway (I'd forgotten the lil Caitian's whiskers), so I tried something subtle... this one's even unnerving me.

Good call, @Cyfa! :techman:

That'll be my final entry.

I wasn't sure I'd think up an idea for this month's challenge, when I announced that January's winning theme was "Transporter Malfunctions" all I could think of was Red Dwarf's vindaloo monster. :ack:

I certainly didn't think I'd get the beginnings of any idea posted before the main challenge thread went up. But a pun suddenly came to mind and I had to try it out...

Sorry! :D

Bream people? Well there are the Breen but that'd be a very different transporter malfuntion. ;)
~ Unless... the Breen are fish people under those exosuits?!?
(My terrible/obscure "people" comment was in reference to this from Lower Decks :D)

Anyway, I love Bream-Kirk's expression! And as for fish-based puns, my mind has gone blank too - all I've got is "something something Captain Pike".

It's been such a crazy month I didn't even know if I'd be able think up an idea.

And although I never considered a romantic twist when I dreamt up this theme idea, inspiration struck out of nowhere. So in the spirit of "Casablanca" and "Brief Encounter" I give you:

I'll post in the main contest thread tomorrow, there's always something to tweak...

Be sure to add it to the contest thread!

Was Patrick's top billing and lack of photo on purpose? We could have an angry/jealous-looking still out of context be Picard portrayed as the jealous rival.

^ I love this! The title totally sounds like it could be some schmaltzy romance, you’re right. And your cover perfectly hits the right notes.
Thank you. :D

To be honest I didn't think too much about that, I mainly added Patrick's name because three names on the bottom of the poster looked better than two. But on further consideration I liked the idea that having him named but not seen on the poster added to its wrongness.

BTW, I've edited a tweaked final version into the above post which I'll add to the main contest thread.

Updating this thread with my recent entries.

I've grow quite fond my entry last minute entry for March's "Retro Rockets" challenge.

Another thread on the board started me thinking about the things I appreciated about ST: Picard. And one of those is the initial teaser poster showing Picard and No.1, I would have loved it if the series had just been about Picard and his dog's mis-adventures around the vineyard.

Anyway, I've often thought about re-interpreting the poster in some way and I finally realised this contest was an opportunity to do just that. So, here is Picard and No.1 in the style of L.S. Lowry:

Despite April being rather busy for me I did often think about the challenge through the month. I did a little bit of doodling, flip-flopped over which of Laura's designs to develop and I eventually got all my neurons in a twist trying to figure it all out.

That reminded me of a similar time when, after getting to ambitious over an entry idea, I decided to go minimalistic and created this:

So, as you can tell, this month's entry is heavily influenced by that one. I settled on using Laura's design #21 and I did consider adding a side view for this - the main hull would've been wedge shaped - but decided to concentrate on the keeping the composition as a whole as simple as possible.

Inspired by Laura's Design #21 (link):

~ I'm glad you did find the time, as I really like your minimalist style for this one (and Excelsior). As for twisting neurons, welcome to the club!
