Starscape's Art Challenge Thread

I've spent most of my free time working on my Thunderbird model (fixing some things, rebuilding others). But I have spared a thought for this month's challenge, most of them being too complicated, as usual, for the time I had available, so in reaction to that I decided to go minimalistic...

August's non-Trek challenge... I started too late and too ambitiously, again. But I thought I'd at least post my progress so far.

A bit of back story, because this is a kind of obscure: its seems like every few years someone has tried to relaunch "Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future", mostly with limited success. One of the stand out things for me was in Garth Ennis & Gary Erskine's comics - the Starfire fighters (a space going Spitfire), which I've been attempting to reproduce in Blender.

Here's what I've got so far.

Thanks, guys. :bolian:

Here's some panels of the artwork from the Ennis/Erskine comic, featuring the Starfire:

I've been mainly working on the cockpit canopy this week, the initial mesh was kind of messy so I've been cleaning that up and trying to figure out how to build it so that the middle-section could actually slide open.

I bought some new art software over the summer, Clip Studio Paint, this is my first real attempt a creating something with it. Anyway, for my Lower Decks inspired entry, I've gone over to the Klingons. They can't all be warriors, surely... ;)

Well there was that Cook on DS9 for awile shame he wasnt seen much in the later seasons he could have imparted wisdom and such to the crew

Yeah, I was over-simplifying for the sake of a joke. ;) Thinking about it there have been a quite a few non-warrior klingons: an engineer in TNG, a lawyer in DS9, the judge in TUC, Grilka and her household. But I can't think of any crewmembers of Klingon ships who weren't portrayed as warriors... maybe they're all expected to fight no-matter their main job.

Aside from that amusing expression on your Klingon's face, I love the bugs! The spider/hermit crab thingy is my favourite :D

Thanks, @Cyfa. I was contemplating something Porthos related until I saw your entry and switch to a back-up plan. Turned out well in the end, tho. :)

I'm continuing to build up a scene of the last days of Romulan System, assuming the Romulan/Reman star went through a Red Giant phase before going Super Nova.

I could call this done, but my plan was always to show a rag-tag fleet leaving Remus. If I have time, I was thinking of adding a few out of date Romulan ships and maybe something more Reman in design (but distinct from the Scimitar)... whatever that might look like.:vulcan:

Star Trek: Picard established it was the Romulan star that exploded and destroyed the system. Hobus was only referenced in the tie-in material for ST'09, so not technically canon, right?

I've roughly blocked out some ships in 3d to use as a guide. Here they are rendered in the scene:

Okay, I'm pleased with how this one turned out. Although, I could tinker forever with the ships, I'm going to draw a line under this and call it finished:

I really like this! I love the ship design and the fact that the character doesn't actually look all that evil, but even somewhat friendly. I don't think villains always have to look over-the-top evil.
