Stargazer

Howzabout the fact that they had to introduce themselves to each other in "Yesterday's Enterprise"?
That was from an alternate timeline.

It was just a random thought that popped into my head and I was thinking about the canon, just wondering if it would work, though probably not. Thought it might've been an interesting idea, Picard's first Number One goes off to command the E-C in a few years.

I doubt anything connected with TNG has a hope in hell of being greenlit for TV or movies, but Wentworth Miller would be my choice for a young Picard. With hair, please.

The Ent-C was from the original timeline, and their shared time on the Stargazer would have occurred before the timeline split, so both of them would remember their time together.

Mmmmm...Wentworth Miller

Just realised that. My bad. Ok, no Garrett.

Characters for Pilot Episode (* denotes KIA in the Pilot):

Commanding Officer – Captain Lauren Kane* (Human, Female)
Born in Cape Town, she is dark skinned, of average height and build, in her mid-late 40s. She is a woman of great strength but also patient and approachable, someone who clearly well respected and liked by those around her.
[Played by: Viola Davis]

First Officer – Commander Tohr gelsh Varg* (Tellarite, Male)
Enterprise-style Tellarite, he is in his late 40s or early 50s. He is a pragmatic, up-front and 'surly' officer, known for his strict discipline and adherence to the rulebook—he doesn't suffer fools.
[Played by: Luis Guzmán]

Chief Engineering Officer – Lt. Commander Gieraan Va-Enrosh (Efrosian, Male)
Tall and in good shape, his white hair makes him look older than he actually is (early 40s). A long-time friend of Commander Varg, the two have similar mentalities—he too is blunt and opinionated, and is never afraid to voice his thoughts or opinions.
[Played by: ?]

Chief Helm Officer – Lt. Commander/Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Human, Male)
Born in France, he is of average height and lean build, in peak physical condition for someone in his late 20s. Though young and seen as a bit reckless by some, he is an exceptional officer, who Captain Kane has taken under her wing.
[Played by: Sean Biggerstaff / Charlie Cox / Rupert Evans / Rupert Friend / Charlie Hunnam / James McAvoy]

Chief Security/Tactical Officer – Lt. Commander Rosalyn Wilde* (Human, Female)
Born in San Francisco, she is Caucasian, of average height and a toned, defined build, in her mid-late 30s. She is a strong and highly capable officer, who can be depended on in the worst situations, and who is willing to do whatever is necessary to keep others safe.
[Played by: ?]

Chief Medical Officer – Lt. Commander Hetal Mehra (Human, Female)
Born in New Dehli, she is petite and slim, in her mid-30s. Despite her size she is a woman of great spirit and compassion, who many often turn to for advice. She is in Starfleet to help others and doesn’t care for rank or commendations.
[Played by: Parminder Nagra]

Chief Operations Officer – Lieutenant Bralis Zol* (Bolian, Male)
A bald Bolian, he is of average height and build, in his early 30s. A popular member of the crew, he is always the life and soul of the party, though when on duty he is hard-working and very organised.
[Played by: ?]

Chief Science Officer – Lieutenant Taliana Larojj (Boslic, Female)
Of average height and slim build, in her late 20s or early 30s, she has a fluid movement and gentleness about her that is opposite to her brightly coloured hair. Highly intelligent, many often underestimate her abilities though not after she has a chance to do her job.
[Played by: Emily Blunt / Summer Glau]

Assistant Chief Security/Tactical Officer – Lieutenant Diego Ramirez (Human, Male)
Born on Mars, he is tall and well built, in his late 20s to early 30s. He is something of a contraction, at times led by a fiery passionate side whilst at others being cool and collected. Commander Wilde has taught him well, and he takes his duties as seriously as she does.
[Played by: Jay Hernandez / Rey Valentin]

Relief Helm Officer – Lieutenant JG Sahrayva zh’Taras (Andorian, Female)
Enterprise-style Andorian, she is tall and in great shape, in her mid 20s. From a long and proud line in Starfleet (her zhaney is the CO of the U.S.S. Ambassador); she has a lot to live up to, but is determined to make a career for herself, without relying on her family ties.
[Played by: ?]

Relief Operations Officer – Ensign Barrett Kincaid (Human, Male)
Born on a remote mining colony, his family if of New Zealand origin, he is tall and toned, in his early 20s, best described as ‘dark and broody’. From a hard childhood—of which he doesn’t speak—he joined Starfleet to get away from it.
[Played by: ?]

Additional characters for the Series:

First Officer – Commander T’Loren (Vulcan, Female)
Tall and lean, she appears to be in her mid 30s to mid 40s, but is actually much older. The epitome of Vulcan discipline and control, she has served for over fifteen years and though she didn’t get the command she wanted, she will apply her Vulcan logic to her new posting.
[Played by: Lena Heady / Olivia Williams]

Or if the Bridge positions went the way of TOS (rather than TNG), here is how the characters would be changed.

Alter Lieutenant Zol to become the Chief Navigation Officer, with Ensign Kincaid now the Relief Navigator.

Then add the position of Comm Officer, to be filled by either:

Chief Communications Officer - Lieutenant JG Raahl (Okinaarian [See Ravis from "2 days & 2 nights"], Male)
Tall and toned, he is in his early to late 20s. An intellectual, he has multiple degrees in xenolinguistics after which he entered Starfleet. Very much an academic, he is untested in the field, with his new posting to the Stargazer being his first starship assignment. [Seeing as how no one from off-world (and even a few natives) had trouble with the name of their planet and species, they opted for Okinaari, which means 'people' in their own language]
[Played by: ?]

or

Chief Communications Officer - Lieutenant JG Taeyn (Deltan, Male)
A bald and beautiful Deltan, he is in perfect condition aged in his mid 20s. Though his Oath is on file, he is still something of a flirt, and has many admirers on the crew (which he enjoys). On duty however, he keeps himself focused on his work (well, mostly).
[Played by: ?]

A plan for the new Bridge module (seeing as how I couldn't stand the one from the Stargazer's appearance):

Maybe it's because I grew up with TNG, but I have a difficult time seeing anyone other than Patrick Stewart portraying Captain Picard. (Same for Brent Spiner and Data.) Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are almost mythical archetypes as much as characters, so I never had a problem with other actors portraying them. But, the character of Captain Picard is so defined by Patrick Stewart that I don't think I could see anyone else portraying him.

I love Patrick Stewart and couldn't imagine anyone else in the role in TNG, but the Picard in his younger days does seem to be a very different man--going by what is said about him and what is known that he got up to back then.

When I think on who I'd want in the role there are four actors that come to mind for Lieutenant Commander/Captain Picard:

Charlie Cox

Rupert Evans

Sean Maher

James McAvoy

Many of us make the same case for William Shatner as Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy now would have kind of a hard time playing Kirk and Spock in their 30's, wouldn't you think?;)

As would Stewart.

I wouldn't have any problem with a recasting of Picard or Data or any other Trek character. If they can successfully recast Spock, they can recast anyone.

I just don't think the TNG characters are as iconic or popular as the TOS characters, so I don't see the value in recasting them vs inventing new characters. The TOS recast was a marketing ploy because even non-fans know who Kirk and Spock are, and it sure worked in getting the movie the attention that it otherwise wouldn't have had. The TNG characters are associated with too many bad movies.

However, if the characters were recast, I'd opt for Wentworth Miller as Picard and Alan Tudyk as Data. Sean Maher isn't the Picard type, but I wouldn't mind him having a different role in a new series.

I'd also like to see them get over their inhibitions about Picard having a genuine French accent. I know at first blush it seems like the audience would laugh at the guy, but I think they could pull it off convincingly. A good actor would not make the guy sound like Inspector Clouseau or PePe LePew.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are almost mythical archetypes as much as characters, so I never had a problem with other actors portraying them.
A character needs to be an archetype in order to be worth bringing back at all. But I'd say Picard, Data and Worf have enough archetype-aspects that they can make that leap.

I was watching Frost/Nixon last night and I thought that Matthew McFadyen, who played John Birt, was remarkably like Brent Spiner. But I don't think there's the remotest chance of the TNG crew appearing onscreen ever again, whether in a sequel to NEM, a reboot/ remake or prequel.

Why is Data playing a medieval monk? :D
It's not like that's the first time.

True, Marina Sirtis' guest appearances on VOY will probably remain the last TV appearance of a TNG character.

I think Sirtis and Frakes's appearance in TATV have the VOY appearance beat.
