Stargate Universe preview tonight

I still have serious misgivings about the Stargate writers being able to pull off the types of stories they're talking about.

I haven't been paying that much attention; are they talking about story ideas that go beyond the monster-of-the-week/canned episode ideas that are standard for Stargate?

Even the stuff Stargate has done could sound BSG-ish in a one-paragraph description. "Poisoning the Well," for example could be BSG-ish if the ramifications were followed up on. A description of that episode alone might give the impression that they would follow it up. The Wraith or Goa'uld could sound like the Cylons if they were handled as serious characters instead of as cardboard props for Our Heroes to shoot at.

^Honestly, Temis, of all the things to copy from nuBSG, I hope to God/gods the Cylons (as shown) aren't one of them. They weren't exactly deep on substance themselves, so much as soap-operatic angst. One Tree Hill villains.

This teaser was clearly designed to nab BSG fans, once again underscoring skiffy's epic shallowness. "They'll like this. It's all gritty and dark and stuff." I think I'll skip the appetizers and wait for the main course.

When I first saw the teasers from Atlantis, I just knew this show was gonna rock. We were gonna get Ancients, FFS. Ancients! Then I heard about the Wraith and my optimism shrank a bit. It went down on a steep bezier curve from that point forward. That's not to say that I absolutely loathed Atlantis, but that I had simply built it up too much and so ultimately, it did disappoint.

With Universe, as well as Caprica and even (to a lesser extent) Trek XI, I'm practicing the well honed art of lowered expectations. It'll be almost impossible to disappoint me with SG:U, unless it truly blows. If it is an arc driven show, I'll skip it since, with BSG having ended, I've decided that Lost will be my last TV "miss one episode and you'll be hopelessly lost" serial drama.

But if it isn't and can at least maintain a level equal to the best SG:1/Atlantis eps, then it'll make for a nice way to kill some time when I happen to be home and bored on the days it's on.

In the end, that's the best I think I can hope for, and the worst I can expect.

Looks like they're seriously trying to imitate Galactica's visual aesthetic
Or maybe they're just using rapid jump-cuts to give the appearance they are doing so. And even if they ape the aesthetic (not hard to do), it doesn't mean SGU will be like BSG in any substantive way.
Agreed. But that visual asthetic is cool, though. If that's the route they go, I applaud them for doing so. It's what Enterprise should have done.

But, yes, just because it looks like BSG doesn't mean it is BSG. I still have serious misgivings about the Stargate writers being able to pull off the types of stories they're talking about. I just don't see these writers being able to pull off BSG-type stories. But we shall see.

God, I hope that they at no time attempt to do stories similar to that angst-ridden trainwreck that is Battlestar Galactica!:scream:

That preview did nothing for me.

Same here. Not sure what we were supposed to feel from seeing people running around in dark corridors. How is mass panic an exciting tease for a TV series? That said I did like seeing LDP and the gate at the end.

Yeah, I don't get how people running around in the dark is at all exciting for a preview. It may be great or it may suck but this doesn't say much either way.

Yes.

The series is billed to be much more serialized and character-driven than SG1 or SGA, and will deal less with alien contact and more with survival.

At least, that's what they all say.

To me the trailer didnt remind me so much of BSG, more like Transformers with fleeting glimpses of scenes.

Doesnt look too bad, but a 30 second teaser cant portray enough to indicate if its going to be good only seeing the full thing, optimistic about this and will at least give the three part premier a go and likely a couple of episodes after that.

It amazes me that they would choose to air this during the BSG finale. I guess they didn't have a choice, though... since they don't have anything else worth watching on the air.

It just seems a bit like having Van Halen open for your garage band.

That sounds interesting, but will really put the burden on the characters to be compelling in their own right, something I havent' seen a lot out of Stargate lately and when they've managed it, it's had a lot to do with the particular actors (RDA, Flanigan).

I just saw the preview a few minutes ago and I was pretty impressed. I too was expecting more of that light action/adventure vibe that the two other shows had.

Sorry was that preview supposed to be impressive or prompt excitement from people?

A bunch of peope running around in dark corridors?

Yawn.

Not to mention the fact that SGA could have had a near identical trailer when the expedition team arived at Atlantis for the first time.
