Stargate Universe -- Like TNG, DS9, and VOy wrapped up into one show

Re: Stargate Universe -- Like TNG, DS9, and VOy wrapped up into one sh

Not a brilliant show, or even a good one, but there were episodes I was glad I took the time to watch.

A far better show than a lot of people gave it credit for. Yes it took too long to get going (the point where they found the bridge etc probably should have been the end of S1). Some episodes were better than others (but you could say that about a lot of shows) and I liked the cast, in particular Young, I thought he made a pleasant change from the competent/never makes a mistake CO, and I liked his interplay with Rush. It isn't the greatest show ever made but is pretty far from the worst. They did overuse the stones but I thought it was a nice compromise from the we're completely cut off/it's like we're just round the corner nonsense Atlantis went through between seasons 1 and 2.

I think it was kinda doomed from the start though. Too many people complained that it wasn't light hearted like the other SG shows (the same people who'd have likely complained if it had just been an SG1/Atlantis clone) and there were too many BSG comparisons (again amusingly people rave about BSG and ask why more shows can't be like it, but when others try they're either castigated for not being as brilliant as RDM's show, or for riding its coattails!)

I'll give SGU this, it managed to be dark and gritty without ever getting as nihilistically grim as Galactica.

It would have been nice to have had some closure on the series. When it was good, it was very good. However, many of the episodes were very drawn out and boring, or too derivative of plots that had been previously been used on SG1 and Atlantis. I assume that eventually they would either have made contact with the intelligence that left a message in the CBR, who would help them make their way home, or somehow they would become the origin of that message and thereby create the Universe.

I always thought it was kind of funny how so many people criticized Voyager. Then they got exactly what they wanted with SGU (more conflict, more desperation, more struggles for basic necessities, etc.)......and they didn't like that either.

The concept for SG:U was fine, the problem was with the execution.
