Stargate Universe -- Like TNG, DS9, and VOy wrapped up into one show

I've been watching Stargate Universe on Netflix recently, and though it was cancelled I'm totally into it being about 10 episodes from the end.

Has or is anyone else watching it? What's neat is it's like DS9 and Voyager wrapped up into one. Also some of the episodes are very similar to Trek episodes.

The latest one I watched had one of the characters, Dr. Rush, escaped Destiny (the ship) in a shuttle right before it blew-up and was thrown back in time about 12 hours before the incident. Sounds MUCH like TNG episode Time Squared... but the episode was called Cause and Effect which is another TNG episode title

There have been a few of these similarities between SGU and Trek, specifically TNG. Anyone notice any others?

There is a Stargate forum here. I mostly liked the show. However the change in tone was enough to annoy many long time fans of the franchise.

What you may find endearing or interesting i call bland and repeating.

The SF Tv market is quite small.. chances are high that people who've watched Universe have also watched Trek and are thus familiar with the stories so where's the appeal to see basically the same story just with different sets and actors/characters?


Enterprise was a bad example with this.. you had 2 characters stranded together in a ship/remote location and the focus of the episode was that they got to know each other better whole overcoming a crisis or the ever popular 2 people from different races which are hostile towards each other get stranded in a dangerous environment and have to work together to escape and while they do that they get to know each other and realize the other one isn't so bad.

These are good story but when you have seen it a half dozen times or more in different shows it becomes stale.

Universe tried to ride on the BSG success by being dark, broody and hopeless and it failed.. where BSG succeeded for the most part due to some amazing episodes and outstanding actors Universe fell flat due to bad storytelling and positioning itself too far from its parent show.

I love DS9, it's one of my favorite shows of all time. SGU is no DS9, and that's putting it mildly. It's not even on par with VOY. I couldn't even make it past the first episode.

It was just a sad attempt by the Stargate writers to ape Ron Moore's "gritty" BSG style, except it was obvious they didn't have the first frakking idea what they were doing.

The result wasn't gritty, it was just boring with a bunch of boring, useless characters played by actors of ahem varying talent. So they gained nothing while losing the breezy charm that the Stargate fanbase loved. It was the worst of both worlds, no big surprise that the ratings fell off a cliff and finally that mess was put out of its misery.

I'm no fan of Stargate's breezy (and brainless) tone, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that SGU would be more "serious." But for SGU to have been a success, MGM (which owns the franchise) really needed to fire the writers and producers and replace them with Ron Moore and his gang - the Stargate writers are obviously far more limited in what they're capable of doing, and the BSG tone was simply beyond their talent level.

Overall, I liked 'Stargate Universe' but I definitely recognize that there are stretches of episodes where it is just too slow for its own good.

Loved SG-1, liked SG:A, and thought SG-U was ok.
They tried to set this moody tone in SG-U that they just couldn't pull off. However, I loved the last six or seven episodes, and the two parter with the planet Novus ranks in my top 10 of all Stargate shows.
I was ok with SG-1 and Atlantis' breezy tone. They aired on Friday nights, and after a long week of work it was great to come home, disconnect my brain and just have fun for a couple of hours.

You know I can't help but wonder if SG:U had been more in the vein of SG-1 and SG:A and had still been cancelled after 2 seasons. Would we be hearing critisims that it was too similiar to what had been done before?

I thought it was pretty good. I watched it all on Netflix, and was actually a little sad when it was done, knowing that was the end of the show. On the other hand, the soundtrack for it was FANTASTIC, and I really wish it would get released, unlikely as that is.

I liked Stargate Universe a lot.

I always thought it was kind of funny how so many people criticized Voyager. Then they got exactly what they wanted with SGU (more conflict, more desperation, more struggles for basic necessities, etc.)......and they didn't like that either.




Temis is right about one thing: SGU was no DS9. And by that I mean it didn't make me want to go and stab myself in the eye with a fork.

I tried watching it. I was never really into SG1 or SGA, I would watch occasionally, but, they never grabbed me. I thought I would give SGU a try, ground floor and all.

But, it was kinda boring, kinda been there done this with Battlestar, and annoying... seriously, why stupid rocks to communicate with Earth, can't they just be stranded and we never hear from Earth?

So, I stopped about halfway through the first season.

SGU's idea of conflict was laughable. "We're civilians who were hired by the military to work for the military. We voluntarily signed a contract stating we accept the authority of our military commander. But we want to be in charge because the military should answer to civilians."

It wasn't laughable to me.

I saw it as one of the most realistic parts of the show. Guaranteed in a situation like that, the civilians are not just going to blindly follow orders.

This mission was a little outside the scope of their contracts...

It's like someone turned VOY's "Threshold" into several seasons. So the initial post isn't that far off.

yeah i noticed the same thing,when i saw the first 4 episodes or so i noticed the same thing.

I didn't know what they planned to do and started to lose interest-then a few episodes got to me enough to see it through. Still think the final episode was a great call, though. Sadly, the writing was never on a par with Rene E, Ron Moore or J. Michael.
