Stargate: Universe is what Voyager should've been like

Maxillius

Commander
Red Shirt
Seriously. Very dark, very hopeless, very OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE BECAUSE THE SHIP IS FRAKKED!!!

I don't really like Stargate Universe, though... :(

Can't we pick a better show? NuBSG gets selected a lot, but I don't think I want VOY to be that either...

I have 2 more eps. to finish my first time watch of nuBSG.

I love the show but Voyager could NEVER be like that.

1) Voyager isn't a 50 year old ship ready to be mothballed or computer systems from the 80's.

2) We aren't the only living things in the universe.

3) The Cylons are more conflicted and easier to get around than the Borg.

Shoot a Cylon enough times and they become to religious to be a threat.

Yeah that whole "no aliens" thing kinda puts a damper on the idea. They could use that seasickness-inducing hand-held camera thing, though. (Seriously, I can't watch nuBSG without reaching for the Dramamine.)

I do like nuBSG, though. But it wouldn't fit.

Loved nuBSG so would have liked to have seen Moore's vision of VOY. Though I'm sure this has been endlessly discussed already :)

Never seen SGU. Looking for a new sci-fi series with good actors/stories/narrative arc, so can anyone recommend if this worth watching?

Honestly... no, in my opinion. But YMMV :)

I'm sure Ron Moore VOY would have been pretty cool. The few eps he did do were good. It wouldn't have worked as a carbon copy of BSG, though.

It's already been cancelled.

How's that for a recommendation?

While I enjoyed nuBSG.
Looking back on it, Moore didn't have one original idea for the series.
EVERYTHING he used came from other sci-fi stories, movies & concepts.
The Cylons are just a copy of "Invasion of the Body Scatchers" meets "I,Robot", for example.

Not to mention, that no Trek show could ever be like nuBSG due to the fans.
People died on nuBSG, Voyager fans are still complaining about the Kes leaving & the death of Joe Carey.
If Voyager can't kill off characters, then Trek can't be as dramatically realistic as nuBSG.

SGU is proof that Voyager is great as is.

Seriously, SGU was terrible for it's first year. It turned Stargate (which I love) into a feeble rip-off of BSG (which I hated). The bad Voyagers are at least watchable. The bad SGU's aren't.

SGA vs. Voyager is much more interesting to me - Janeway vs. Weir!

Seriously folks, if Voyager had to be like anything it should've been a less chaotic version of Farscape. Plenty of aliens around, the resupply issue is just a background excuse for visiting lots of alien worlds and maybe one or two major episode plots, the tensions fade after a season or so.

The main issue would be recurring enemies. In Farscape starships couldn't be easily tracked, so if the aliens in VOY couldn't track Warp Drive emissions (hey, it's a different tech from a different part of the Galaxy!) then that problem is solved.

Also, it shouldn't have been in the Delta Quadrant, made it too easy to overuse the Borg. It should've been in the far reaches of the Beta Quadrant or something.

Dear. God. NO!

SGU was horrendous.

I mean really, say what you will about Voyager being bad and stuff(OP, I'm not saying you did) but it was so much better than Universe.

froot is right though, a Ron Moore Voyager would have been cool.

I like how Ron Moore finished DS9 and headed over to the writers on VOY to contribute and basically went away terrified!

From Memory Alpha:
We sat down and approached ‘Equinox II' and tried to find what the show was about. What was the point of meeting this ship and this crew and this captain, and what did it mean? We finally landed on this idea that the two captains were going to go in opposite directions. Janeway was going to really feel the same kind of pressures and stresses that Ransom felt, and watch how it could turn a good, by-the-book Starfleet captain into what he had become. At the same time, his interaction with the Doctor and Seven of Nine would rekindle his humanity. It was this nice, double track approach, but it just got lost in the translation. It has no coherence. You're not sure what's really going on. You've got some potentially good scenes. The scenes between Janeway and Chakotay had some real fire to them, and you kind of felt like she is going off the deep end, a bit. Then she relieves him of duty, and there is this crisis of command between the two of them. But at the end of the episode, it's just a shrug and a smile and off to the next. I just hit the ceiling. I remember writing in the margins, ‘This is a total betrayal of the audience. This is wrong. You can't end the show like this. If you are going to do all this other stuff, you can't end the show like this, because it's not fair, because it's not true, and it just wouldn't happen.'" Moore continued his criticisms of the episode: "The things that Janeway does in ‘Equinox' don't work, because it's not about anything. She's not really grappling with her inner demons. She's not truly under the gun and suffering to the point where you can understand the decisions that she's made. She just gets kind of cranky and bitchy. She's having a bad day; these things keep popping around on the bridge, and we just keep cutting to shots of people grabbing phaser rifles and shooting, and hitting the red alert sign, over and over again. It doesn't signify anything. It's kind of emblematic of the show. There is a lot of potential, and there is a lot of surface sizzle going on in a lot of episodes, but to what end? What are we trying to do? What are we trying to touch in the audience? What are we trying to say? What are the things we are trying to explore? Why are we doing this episode? That was my fundamental question. When I would say, ‘What was the point of doing the first part?' there was never a good answer for that. As a consequence, it was hard to come up with the ending to the show that has no beginning. You just start throwing things around. ‘Two captains on different courses' at least sounds like an episode. At least there is something in it. Janeway will take something away from that experience, but not in the current version. What does she learn from that experience? I don't know how it's affected her. Chakotay, for all his trouble, he just goes back to work. There is no lingering problem with Janeway; there is no deeper issue coming to the fore. The show in general just kinda sucks frankly.

Indeed. If you want to see the real difference between DS9 And VOY go watch Flashback and Trials and Tribbleations!

What, that every single bad thing that happens should have some huge lingering scar on the characters? Other Trek characters go through worse in all the other series, including one Moore worked on, and he never complained there.

Hell, in NuBSG characters do things that should change them more but they ended up less changed too.

Moore is a hypocrite.

Moore is a hypocrite.

Maybe a little. But nuBSG was awesome. And he knew what he was doing. If they ever make Trek a show again(Oh, please not for a while) then he should head it out not Braga, or Abrams, maybe Lindelof, but most definitely Moore should have something to do with it.

Moore just doesn't know how easy he and Ira Behr had it with DS9 and how oppressive Network TV could get.

And his own attempt at a "space survival drama" burned out after 2 seasons, and required too many breaks from established Trek to work in the Trekverse to begin with!

Honestly, I would have liked Voyager to have used some elements from Lost. Straight-up flashbacks would have been a way to flesh out the characters' histories--we could see Paris betraying people and Torres quitting the Academy ourselves, instead of just hearing people talk about it. Lost also got the inclusion of B and C team characters right. I'm not sure that it would have worked in the 1990s, but if I had a way to magically redo all of Voyager, I'd give it some of those elements.

NuBSG ran out of steam after only 2 seasons. The 3rd season was where it started to wind down, which led to the subpar 4th season and that godawful ending which highlighted the problems of the entire show.

Hell, the very premise of "Ship lost in space far from home" is only good for a few seasons anyways. You need something else to further drive the plot on.

Moore's attempts at making new shows never pan out, Caprica went bust, I don't think the other NuBSG show will fare any better. And this new show of his just sounds like a Urban Crime drama of Final Fantasy or Avatar: Last Airbender.
