Stargate SG1 show. any fans?

Huh, also I just watched There But For The Grace Of God.

The remote control for the mirror is held by Carter when she blows herself up, but don't they have it in later episodes?

The Tollan first appeared in "ENIGMA",
I always liked the scene in Enigma where the Tollan's douchebag leader (played by Tobin Bell) is trying to explain how his interstellar communications gizmo works, and Daniel, thinking he understands says "you're talking about actually folding space." Tobin Bell just gets a blank look on his face for a few seconds before simply saying "no."

That scene always gets me. It's like, this is so far beyond you. The Tollan were interesting.

I never bought the reason why they couldn't have removed Selmac from Jacob Carter.

"Selmac is about to die, and he's going to take Jacob with him."
"Why can't we remove Selmac before that happens?"
"Because Selmac is too weak and he will die."
"Won't Selmac die anyway?"
"..."
"..."
"Look, the actor's contract is up, just roll with it."

The reason that Selmac was implanted in the first place was Jacob was near death at the time, and Selmac was old and near the end of its life. It's possible that instead of curing Jacob for good, Selmac really only managed to stave off the worst symptoms of Jacob's illness. In that case, Jacob would only live as long as Selmac did.

In the meantime, the relationship between Jacob and Selmac must have become truly symbiotic in that Jacob was also keeping Selmac alive, even if he didn't know it. That means by the time that dialogue was spoken, the characters were facing a "Damned if you do..." situation concerning removing Selmac. There was simply no way to avoid losing both patients.

And hey, maybe it was about Carmen Argenziano's contract being up. There are several way less plausible on screen explanations they could have gone with, even if the dialogue is klunky.

It just felt like they didn't justify not removing Selmac in the story and they could have just as easily had Jacob retire on Earth as a normal older human.

Did Argenziano even have a contract in the usual sense? He wasn't a regular.

But yeah, given that the show thought they needed to wrap everything up, I'm okay with it going the way it did. Selmak appearing in a different (presumably younger) host might have been interesting but could have felt like a rip-off of what DS9 did with Dax.

That was kind of my impression, which may or may not be intended but that was my feeling.

Season 8 really was intended to be the end, and indeed, season 9 was originally meant to be the first season of a new spin-off titled Stargate Command until the decision was made at the last minute to make it a ninth season of SG-1 instead. So, yeah, Jacob's death was mostly about the show's going to end, let's say good-bye to this long running supporting character. It was for a similar reason Dr. Frasier was killed in the seventh season.

That would have been better and the Ori would have been a much better threat.

Yeah, but then they wouldn't make it to 200 episodes and achieved the record for longest running genre show made in North America, which is what SyFy was mostly interested in, given they announced SG-1's cancellation almost immediately after the 200th episode aired.

These days, Supernatural has that record whupped anyway.

With 327 episodes, they will almost certainly maintain that for a LONG time.

Particularly with how short seasons are these days. (Hell, DISCOVERY would have to get to an 8th season just to reach 100 episodes, and it would only barely beat ENTERPRISE's count.)

Side note: I remember THE X-FILES was the first North America genre show to hit 200 episodes. Oddly enough, there was absolutely NO fanfare for sych a milestone. Maybe because the 2 part series finale was directly after it.

Dr Frasier's death had meaningful dramatic impact though. :)

I tried to watch season 9, I just couldn't. I wish they had picked another way to attract a new threat besides the exact same mistake they made to attract the gu'ald threat. Another 'Let's explore more WHOOPS bad people are here'. And they picked a villain so strong, the only way to beat them was to find the next ancient super-macguffin. Then they made Vala kind of crazy over the top for the show she was in.

I was a little disappointed they never did an episode where the world found out about the Stargate and had to deal with the fallout. One of those pre-serialization mindsets where we must not disturb the status quo of the planet Earth too much.
