Stargate SG-1 First Time Watch Thread

Careful guys, remember the OP is a Stargate Virgin, going through the show for the first time, and he hasn't reported watching many episodes yet. Don't want to talk too much about what is to come (I realize no one has actually stated any spoilers yet, just that I know how easy it is, when a conversation gets rolling to say something without realizing it, so, just a reminder to remember he's a first time watcher, still in early S1 it seems)

I think that most of us are at the point where we can have full conversations about episodes without needing to post a single plot detail.

Like when we discuss that episode where that thing happened to Teal'c. You know which one. (Psst, it's Bane).

SG-1 is a fun show, the first sci-fi I ever watched in its entirety. It doesn't get quite as technical as Star Trek and not as emotional as Babylon 5 but it fills the space inbetween. Most of the serialized episodes and pretty good and half of the episodic episodes are very interesting. The problem I found was there was too many filler stinkers that were painful to get through(Atlantis only has a few of these), overall a great show with great acting and character dynamics.

I wouldn't mistake Stargate SG-1 for a great show very often, but it is predominately an entertaining one, at least until the drastic changes in season nine.

The spin-offs (and I'd include seasons nine and ten here, especially since they were originally going to actually be a spin-off called Stargate Command) are really an example of diminishing returns, but they have a few moments of interest.

I don't mind stand alone, as long as there is some overall arc....

Need to get my head away from Mass Effect want watch a few more episodes.

SG-1 is a good example of a show that juggles the episodic and serialized formats into one cohesive program. The season openers and finales are quite well-done and often lead into the next season.

So noted....

"The Broca Divide"

Every science fiction show seems to want to have a episode where everyone goes crazy. This is fine. But much like the TNG Naked Now, why are you doing so early in Season 1? You barely know who the characters are and yet they are going native. The cure was cute idea, and the acting was better. And I did get the chuckle out of the tan tank top.

C+

"The First Commandment"

This is a very very good episode. Yes, its a bit of a formula, yes, the outfits of the natives at time made me laugh (Arabic and bad jungle movie costumes) But there was something satisfying about the natives throwing the would be god into the star gate to meet the Iris.

B+

I have always loved that episode. The idea of being worshipped as Gods by a more primitive people has always fascinated me, and so I found this ep to be a good series-starter. The whole Carter-ex-fiance thing was not needed and really didn't make a big difference in the end though.

^^My guess is they wanted one of the main characters to have a personal stake in things. Since they already used Kawalski as an old war buddy of O'Neill's and it wouldn't make much sense for Daniel or Teal'c to have any sort of connection to an SG team leader, that left Carter. Perhaps instead of an ex-fiancee they could/should have just made the guy her ex-lover or something, but whatever.
