Having lesbian soldiers or just lesbians in general is totally gutless. They don't dare upset their heterosexual male audience with gay guys, and certainly not macho type gay guys.

John Barrowman was interviewed on TV a while back saying he had auditioned for the Will & Grace and didn't get the part as he 'wasn't gay enough'. Though more interestingly he said he felt the studio weren't happy to have a gay actor, and the audience would be happier to have a straight actor playing a gay man.

Which I thought was a little... weird? Though now he's the lead on Torchwood, not just openly gay, but in intimate scenes with a co star.

And on the Atlantis subject...
...I'd have to say Zalenka. I wouldn't care about anything such as having a thing fo Elizabeth... I'd want him coming out to Rodney and admitting their tension was all sexual.

I'd watch just for the reaction.

The gutsiest move would be for them to opt for Lorne being gay. Definitely shouldn't be Zelenka. Who the heck is Chuck?

He wants to name the character after the show has finished it's run because he doesn't have the balls to do before. Then again that would impact ratings pretty negatively in the US.

I don't think it would hurt the ratings at all, but yes it is wimpy doing it now.

By the way, the SG-1 doctor is gay, just wanted to say that. She has been dead 5 years, so it's safe to say she's gay.

Indeed, the show where everybody's gay. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I just get the feeling that Russell T. Davies likes to have gay characters in prominent positions in his productions in the same way Spike Lee likes to have black characters in similiar positions.

However, attacking Stargate for not having a gay male character gets on my nerves a little bit. Stargate: Atlantis is not a political action group, it's a Sci-Fi action television show.

Having a character turn out to be gay is so clichéd these days they'd get more criticism for doing it than they ever will for not. Plus, as has already been pointed out, the US military operates a policy of "Don't ask, Don't tell". I might not like that policy, but Stargate has benefitted greatly from the support of the US military over the years.

Ultimately, the sexuality of the characters does not really make a difference to this show since their romantic lives have not been particularly well explored. How do we know that Zelenka, Lorne, Chuck, Amelia, Vega or any other background character isn't gay ? We can't know because their characters haven't been well explored.

Shepherd's clearly a dumb jock led around by his dick, McKay is usually too busy to care, Teyla had a boyfriend we never saw right up until she got pregnant and Ronon's a neanderthal whose idea of romance involves a big stick. Weir had the standard problem Janeway had and with this being a TV show, nobody like Woolsey is ever going to get a real girlfriend who is not a simulation created by an ancient space probe!

Like he said, if they never do anything with it, he'd might consider revealing it in a JK Rowling way (which, interestingly enough, no one seemed to be in an uproar over when she threw Dumbledore out of the closet).

Not how I remember it, there was some major bile flying on the net about that, many of the same things that have been said with regard to this topic by the blog commenters. - 'She was just doing it for publicity', 'it's just for political correctness', 'it ruins Dumbledore's character', 'what was the point of revealing it', 'zomg now my harry/dumbledore slash fic is TEH CANON!!!!11!'

Obviously, it had to be Ford. Remember how he was always chasing after Shep, bringing him ham sandwiches? And how hurt he was when Shep found a big new guy who likes playing with his gun? And he's dead, joining the ranks of all the dead lesbians from oh so many tv shows. So obvious now that it's over...Thanks Mallozzi!

Really? Hmm...well, you are probably right. I just remembered things differently. Then again, the major Potter fans I knew tended to be hard-core liberals, so maybe the revelation to them would have had a different effect then a general audience. Oh well, I stand corrected and retract my comment.
