Starfleet Acaedmy Your Circulum?

I've been curious about this...first what kind of classes would they have at the Academy? I like to think they'd have some kind of advanced West Point or other military classes mixed in with scientific and academic courses. I already know that my major would probably be in xenohistory or something like that. What would you take if you were among the few best and brightest? I didn't see the thread for the other Starfleet Academy thread so mods go ahead and delete this if you like.

First of all, I'd throw out that idea that Starfleet Academy only admits the brightest and the best that Season One TNG claimed. Why would they admit Barclay then?

Their curriculum would have to be revelant to the times. Life as a cadet at the Academy during the 2360s (an era of tranquil peace most of the time) would be different than one attending the academy in the 2370s what with the Maquis, the Dominion War and the Borg attacks (two occured near Earth ).

To serve an territory 8,000 light years across, Starfleet Academy would have to be HUGE. It is likely there are many campuses in order to accodomate the high number of cadets. The magnitude is too high for me to speculate. Actually I'd think Xenobiology would be too broad in order to cover the biology of each individual world/member race.....

^So what would YOUR curriculum choices be? That IS the question asked by the OP. Otherwise, there are plenty of other threads in which to post.

Barclay was accepted to the Academy on the merit of his academic and scientific genius not his eccentric personality or supposed disorders so I don't know what you mean regarding him Finn. In addition to the required military standard courses as I indicated in my original post my major would be in Xenohistory and I would most likely take a slew of other history electives. History of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets among them.

^Colleges do reject canditates because of behavior issues despite strong grades. My professor told me of a situtation where they interviewed a canditate for entry to the department and the individual couldn't even talk or answer the questions at all. Strong grades and merit isn't an automatic qualification. Imagine Barclay constantly stammering in an interview with an administratior upon applying....

Curriculum isn't a list of courses. It is a woven web of stuff that connects everything that goes on around a school from building design (like locations of the windows on the classroom door) to books to locations of the classrooms, to how the faculty treats the students, and more.

Why are you asking me to post in other threads? I was responding to his first question. There would be so many courses to be taught, like Classic Literature of Betazed 101 from between the 10th and the fourth centuries B.C, to Plasma glass arts 202. To me, it's a broad question.

ETHICS!!

Xenopsychology!!

Xenobiology!!

AstroPhysics!!

Warpspace physics!!

Transporter operations!!

Celestial Navigation!!

Engineering!!!

First Contact procedures!!

Procedures when encountering species of higher development and weaponry!!

No-win scenario!

(well actually, i think they'll just be the same as the ones the US have today, they'll just have better ways of killing people)

If I were applying for the Academy I'd go for Flight Control as my main subject, with maybe Tactics and Strategy and Xenohistory or Xenosociology on the side.

I've always thought that the Academy would deal with all the general courses (ethics, survival, rules & regs, introductory engineering / navigation / sciences) in the first year, so that all cadets have the basics before they go on to specialise in their desired field.

I know they're not canon but the RPG books do have lists of courses available at Starfleet Academy.

Probably not too different from the curriculum I've pursued in my academic career (astrophysics), plus some tactics and likewise military-minded classes. I would also put to good use my years of studying jujutsu and other martial arts, I guess.

I'd have a field day just in basic warp field theory. I'd definitely take the engineering route:

Advanced Warp Field Theory
Isolinear Circuity
Warp Plasma Thermodynamics
Subspace Communications Networking

Where do I sign up?

Photon Torpedos have always fascinated me so I'd go for anything associated with weapons technology.
