News Starfleet Academy Nielsen Ratings

More than this mockery, that's for damn sure.
What are you even smoking? So three curvy women show up and all of a sudden Starfleet is the grip of an obesity epidemic? Caleb looks like he could bench press a galaxy class starship, darem can do handstand push ups and both genesis and tarima are smoking hot waif babes.

90's trek by comparison is full of dad bods. You genuinely cannot think that characters like Riker and O'Brien are specimens of peak male athleticism. Like get fucking real.

I asked for numbers. Apparently need to just look myself.

TNG had 11.5 in syndication.

Still ignores current media consumption realities but I'll grant I underestimated the viewership. TNG was not something majority of my peers were discussing.

The 11.5 average was for S5, which was in 1991-1992. When you put TNG's rating against all the other network shows, that places it just below #48 BEVERLY HILLS, 90210.

Now granted, these were all network shows which had a nationwide timeslot which is an enormous advantage over TNG being in the syndicated market. If those affiliates carrying TNG were network stations then they couldn't air TNG anytime during primetime. The only way TNG could be on primetime was if they were aired on an independent station willing to pit the shows against the big networks. My local station certainly did, picking out the best days for the shows where they could serve as counter programming to shows like DOOGIE HOWSER.

And just out of curiosity, here's Voyager's first season rating at 7.9 (#95), which is as high as the show ever got for any season...

Doing the math, DS9's S3 on that same year was slightly below at 7.7, which is just two spots below Voyager.

Where is this energy when Scotty's weight explodes in the movies?

Where was this rage when you saw Wrath of Khan?? I'm assuming the glasses ruined the movie for you.

If they are acceptable but SFA is not, you know exactly what that means - it's only a problem when it's women! Do with that revelation what you wish.

Actually that was an episode of Voyager.

Tuvok had a handful of the crew running around the ship with heavy packs under increased gravity.
FFS I'm not talking about in universe, I'm talking about the fact that star trek has a tendency of hiring doughy, male actors with dad bods and no one bats an eye. But heaven forbid a female cast member not be stick thin and wearing a cat suit.

You may get at most 10 million viewers to watch Star Trek. but usually alot less. And Trek is a large budget production usually because of the setting/cgi costs.

Unless you get a good concept and some great writing/cast and a bit of luck, you'll never get a "marvel, Star wars, GoT" type of audience.

What really is a bit of irritation.. As Spaceballs says.. MERCHANDISING! Where the hell is the merch? You see star wars etc. all over the toy aisles, but barely a whiff on Star Trek. Wheres the action figures? Ship toys? You make your bank from merchandising.. There is some, but it could be MUCH bigger.
I've always wondered that too. I grew up during TNG and dont recall ever seeing Picard or Riker toys. I would have loved an Enterprise D ship to play with. Yet a frigging cartoon like He-man and GI Joe toys were everywhere. My parents being huge Trek fans would have surely gotten them for me had they existed.

Baffling.

Rikers weight gain in season 3 was very much noticed by people. Had the internet been around back then it would have surely been discussed as would William Shatners in the later movies. I dont think its fair, but you know.....people.

There certainly are people that hold men to rigid standards too and want them all to be bodybuilders or twinks but they are most definitely a combination of less numerous, less vocal and less venomous or possibly all of the above.

So while to say they don't exist would be false it is disingenuous to infer anything close to a level playing field.

No it doesn't?

The only time I can think of where there have been lead male actors like that in Star Trek are movies or Picard where the actors were in their 60s+.

I hate to comment on people's appearance like this, but: Shatner, Doohan, Burton, Frakes after a couple seasons, Wang... None of them ever boasted real world astronaut levels of fitness, or combat-ready physiques.

Then of course, there's guest stars - every other captain in TOS was a middle-aged man in reasonable but hardly great shape. TNG continued the tradition by making most captains visibly middle-aged; the ones who looked young and in good fitness (eg Tryla Scott - who I have to use as an example because I can't think of a young, fit male captain in TNG) were few and far between, most were more like Donald Varley or Edward Jellico.

Burton and Frakes were fit through the movies.

Shatner and Doohan only ending up less then that in their later movies.

Memory Alpha has a helpful list.

Lol Frakes needing to suck his gut in to fit in to his TNG uniform and Colm Meaney's double chin would like a word. Also Tom Paris got pretty chunky after season 4 of Voyager. Just sit down mate.

To say that any of the male cast members of 90's trek were peak physical specimens compared to the SFA kids is downright idiotic

Man, that is a really long distance you've moved that goalpost, here I'll remind you of your actual claim.

There is a difference between "overweight" and "fat". Some people are trying their damnedest to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear; apparently, around these parts, it is a seller's market.

Yeah, I have to agree. Sisko started gaining a little around season 5 too. Ironically, the women always looked fantastic and Troi even LOST weight. Too much in my opinion. I liked the early, curvy version of Troi. :D
