News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

It's never been 100% military.

Starfleet's mission is as much scientific and exploratory as it is military.
Against my better judgement I'll just say that militaries have engaged in both those things and has not made them less militaries.

Respect to learn sometimes needs to be earned.
Not in a teacher-student context. And what about the attention part?

Shock horror that teenage characters behave like teenagers

In other news water is wet.

Another great hot take from you.
Students not respecting their teachers is not normal. Doesn't matter if it's a civilian or, in this case, a military context.
Maybe it is in postmodern Western societies (and specially in certain problematic communities). In most parts of the world, societies have a very different attitude towards respect.
Trying to normalize disrespecting teachers is a sign of larger cultural problems.

Disagree and definitely have learned from teachers who worked to earn respect first in order to teach, rather than assume they must listen.

Assumptions are dangerous, especially in a multicultural and multi species environment. How do you show respect? Eye contact or no eye contact? How close do you stand? With humans that varies much less interstellar relationships.

Yes it is lol

Well hopefully the students will be disciplined when they disrespect their teachers. How else do make a military style chain of command work if officers that feel like they have to listen to their superior officers.

Not the show will likely do that. I bet you the show will have the teachers learning from the students because it is going to be aimed at young people and young people like to think they know more about things than older people.

And old people like to look down upon and belittle young people.

There's a reason why respect in a learning context requires work because both sides come with assumptions.

As for chain of command that would require explanation. They're role as instructors and and the cadets roles as learners. You teach them and guide them and never assume knowledge.

Yes but I assume in a show built around the ideas that adults are always wrong they will say the teachers methods of teaching are wrong. Only by giving into the students wishes will the students listen.

But Starfleet is made up ships with phasers and photon torpedos and security officers. The crew follows a military style chain of command. They are often asked to fight wars or defend colonies or civilians in other situations.

I don't have a problem with Starfleet as a military. Just saying that chanting virtues is militaristic or exclusively the province of militaries.
