News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Meh, I stopped watching TMBS after season 3. One of the reasons was that 32nd Starfleet with its weird ass ships and ugly uniforms didn‘t click with me. So I‘m not really excited about a new show in that time frame.

According to Hollywood Reporter's article, this will go into production in 2024. I suspect it will be sometime in 2025 before it starts steaming, a year after Discovery's final bow...

Kurtzman will be co-showrunner alongside Noga Landau (creator of CW’s Nancy Drew)

This is a continuation of the worst-rated Star Trek Discovery season 4 episode.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the younger, edgier version.
A parody made real.

Personally I wish they'd done a series rereboot version of the academy scenes from the 2009 movie, showing Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura and the rest as cadets and continuing that vibe of barely controlled chaos.

But I'll take what I can get.
You mean before Kirk fast tracked to Enterprise Captain

The problem I've always had with a Starfleet Academy series, is that the premise isn't a particularly great story generator. Series based around schools or universities or boot camps etc. usually introduce a Voldemort or a Hellmouth or something to give the characters more interesting lives. It's fine for a school of wizards to put their students at risk, they're wizards, they've got no sense of right and wrong, but I'm not looking forward to seeing the writers contrive reasons to put Starfleet cadets in jeopardy.

I'm definitely not looking forward to more stories like All is Possible, which is right down near the bottom of my own personal episode rankings, mostly because of the cadets. (And honestly I didn't like The First Duty much either. Or the Starfleet Academy PC game. Or the movie Top Gun.)

That said, I'll still give it a shot. I'm not going to judge the series on how bad I think it's going to be.

You need to re-define what "jeopardy" is. "Oh no, Cadet Teen-Trope has got tanked on Romulan ale the night before finals, will they sober up before the exam starts?!". I'll be on the edge of my seat....

I have no problem with an Academy show. Some shows will be hits, some will be misses, but the more variety we get, the better. If I don’t vibe with it, I’ll just stop watching.

Not overly enthused with a 32nd century setting, however. The aesthetic just isn’t quite my tempo. Would much rather this was set concurrently with SNW, if only so we could get the occasional crossover, but whatever.

Uhura is a cadet on SNW.

Michelle has said in recent interviews that she still wants to do S31.

What she wants and what her schedule will permit are two different things.

It'll be more feasible than trying to get Michelle Yeoh.

Yeah that S31 show definitely isn't happening. They waited too long, and she'll be far too busy on other higher profile projects for years to come now. Doing it without her is an option, but an unpalatable one.

This strikes me as a cost-saver. Can't see that it would require anywhere near the same kind of budget that DISCO had.

Young actors will work for peanuts.

Last I heard, S31 was being retooled as a movie.

So they're killing DISCO for ST:SFA (Star Fleet Academy)?

Yep.

It could surprise and be a show like Boston Public.

But your probably right about how the show will turn out
