Star Wars turns 35 today

Way past time for a reboot...

Reboot everything but ANH and ESB of course...

I'd be up for a recasting of the original characters as long as it means we get a new, non-sucky version of ROTJ and the prequel trilogy, taking place right after ROTJ.

I'd even be up for a shot-for-shot remake of ANH and ESB with new actors. Sacrilege! But I bet it would make plenty of money. There's a huge global audience that's emerged for blockbuster movies since ANH debuted.

For Leia: I know she's in frakking everything, but I can't help noticing how much Jennifer Lawrence looks like Natalie Portman, but much taller and more athletically built. Like Dad. :D

As for Luke, no idea, probably need to find an unknown. For Han, good luck, but if they can recast Spock, they can recast anyone.

I thought the reboot Star Wars Han Solo was already set as Nathan Fillion... right? He didn't die or anything?

Iain Glen as Obi-Wan.

But I'm guessing that the drawing probably predates the casting of the Obi-Wan role. Looks like something they played around with in pre-production.

It pre-dates the Obi-Wan role, period. The fellow with the beard is the Han Solo character.

As originally a Jedi Knight.

No, the Han Solo character was never a Jedi. At that point in the screenplay development (second draft, Jan. 1975), Solo was a low-level "space pirate" crewman, not much older than Luke. With his friend Chewbacca, he stole the pirate ship to help Luke because he thought Luke came from a rich family and he could make a big score.

For about a month in the spring of '75, Lucas changed Luke from a boy to a girl, and Ralph McQuarrie used her in some artwork, as in the sketch mentioned above. She was changed back to a boy before she was given a name.

At that stage, lightsabers were not reserved for Jedi knights and were more widely in use; there is a McQuarrie painting from around that time with stormtroopers carrying lightsabers.

In the original draft, Han was a green-skinned alien, so concepts and ideas come and go, never used, etc.

Obviously, that's what my whole last post was about. But the Jedi were around from the earliest draft and Han Solo was never one. The alien "Han Solo" was more an early use of the name, rather than the same character.

But you can definitely see how he looked the part in McQuarrie's sketch. It even seems as if some elements were eventually incorporated into the appearance of Obi-Wan.

I think that's more a reflection of Lucas' earlier concept of Solo as a swashbuckling Captain Blood pirate type, which later changed to more of a Western gunslinger. The early sketches for "Old Ben Kenobi" -- a relatively late addition to the characters -- show more of a monkish robes or Seven Samurai look. The beard is about the only thing in common.
