That's what I thought all along. That he was about to tell Rey he loved her.

Either way it's FAR from the most awkwardly-timed and nonsensical character moment in the Saga and that includes all nine movies across 42 years.

I don't think you'd be the only one ever to think that. Honestly that's what I thought he was going to say. "Rey I love you"

Finn strikes me as that kind of person “Rey, I forgot to tell you, I think... I have the Force” instead of “Rey I think I am in love”. And it's one of those things like when he said “I'm with the Resistance” only because he had a flight with Poe once, where you wouldn't buy it, but it ends up to be true nonetheless.

Doesn't really matter what he was going to say, either way it was still a dumb scene and done mostly just for a running gag between him and Poe...which also didn't go anywhere. Which is kinda typical of JJ as a storyteller to introduce something because "woudn't it be cool if...?!!?" and not bothering to think of the larger implications, whether it supports what's been set up or how it's supposed to play out or pay off later.

Hell, at least there was some precedent for Finn liking Rey. In Star Trek V and after 23 years the producers just pull this whole "Scotty and Uhura are an item" thing that not only never happened before that film but was never again referenced afterwards.

Either one works.
But how about the degree to which they work? Finn and Poe had adventures together in each movie. Rey was off playing I don't like you but I like you with Kylo Ren and their relationship was the one that had the more tension. What's the pay off to Finn telling Rey he loved her? She's hot for Ren. There's nothing there. It won't be the same as Han Solo and Leia or ugh, Anakin and Padame.

"Scotty and Uhura are an item"
Never bothered me. I felt that was more natural than Spock and Uhura. The 2009 film should have planted the seeds for a Scotty Uhura relationship.

The idea that Finn and Rey had any romantic interest in each other was completely concocted by fans, as was the Finn/Poe "ho-yay" stuff. The only romantic relationships hinted at in the ST were Rey/Ben and Finn/Rose, and one ended in tragedy while the other didn't materialize given that the characters involved moved in different directions during the year that transpired between the film in which their romantic interest was established (TLJ) and when we next saw them (TRoS).

I realize that the holiday special is canon adjacent, but it is still official product, and it depicts Rey training Finn with a lightsaber and in the ways of the Force post TROS. Take that as you will, but I took it as an offhanded acknowledgement that he was trying to tell Rey about his Force sensitivity in TROS.

Rey and Finn works fine.

TFA has all the standard romance beats. I mean it presents stronger romance potential than Han and Leia had in 77. So by 'concocted by fans' you really mean "Fans inferring what the film wants them to."

At least it wasn't Luke and Leia..... Though in the original trilogy well, until ROTJ that was open to some debate.

Kylo and Rey never officially bumped boots

I always felt like the only genuine chemistry lay between Finn and Poe, and that was far more of a friendship.

Does it? Han and Leia always felt like a huge stroke of luck for the OT because it felt so natural, probably because Harrison and Carrie were so attracted to each other in real life. Like many other things in the ST, any idea of romance between the main characters felt like something they were checking off a list and never really returned to.

What about all the Luke / Leia shippers before Empire and ROTJ came out?

People will 'ship' anything. It doesn't mean those 'ships' have any actual evidence supporting them.

"Reylo" and "Finnrose" were the only romantic relationships actually hinted at by the Sequel Trilogy, and, as I said, the one ended in tragedy and the other didn't ultimately materialize.
