I love TFA dearly, but the Prequel lightsaber fights were way better. But it works within the context of the story; these people didn't know what they're doing. In Ep8, after Rey and Kylo get their respective training, I want a much more "Prequel-y" fight :ouch:

Hopefully we will get a more experienced fight in the next film. Thugh I wonder if Rey will fight kylo agains so soon and if she will win again. Either Rey will lose this next fight to give Kylo a win or Luke will go after Kylo and lose the fight and die so Kylo will get a win.

Or if Luke chooses to train Rey in the art of the duel. Mark Hamill would need to brush up on his kendo again.

Oh man the Prequel lightsaber fights were amazing. I wonder if we will get a fight scene in this new trilogy the likes of Qui-Gonn/Obi Wan against Darth Maul or Obi Wan vs. Aniken and hopefully there is some great music that goes with it. The music makes those scenes epic.

In the original films they deliberately had no music during the lightsaber fights, they let the saber sounds be the music, up until the very end when Luke defeated Vader, then they had the choir come in and it had such a big impact.

I like either way (The high tension aspect between Vader and Luke for instance was great in Empire and Jedi) but the most memorable scenes in the prequels was the use of the original John Williams score to go along with the Lightsaber battle. Heck, there wasn't a lot of things I liked about TPM, but that lightsaber scene was the part I liked the most.

Duel of the Fates is one of the greatest lightsaber battles in the history of the franchise. The scope. The drama. The music. The pacing was fantastic, and by the time Obi-Wan is hanging for dear life at the edge of the open pit and about to be struck down by Darth Maul you're on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. If only the rest of the climactic battle on Naboo had been as exciting or as interesting as the duel between the two Jedi and Maul.

The thing is, there was music made for the Vader and Luke fights, it is on the albums. But it doesn't get heard until Vader starts using the Force to throw stuff at Luke.

Speaking of Maul and choreography there is a nice fan film out, highlighted here.

After watching a video on IGN about the history the Skywalker lightsaber, I was skimming through the TFA Visual Dictionary and Wookiepedia, and I noticed that we don't appear to have gotten an explanation for how it ended up with Maz Kanata. I'm assuming since Star Wars seem to like to explain things down to the tiniest detail that there must be a reason this hasn't been explored.

Probably to give the sequel writers some wiggle room in terms of storyline. I don't think they want that answer until later on, such as Luke entrusting it to Maz before his self-imposed exile.

All I read somewhere is that somebody retrieved the lightsaber from the bowels of Cloud City's industrial area and thus saved it from being lost or destroyed. What happened to it after it was found is a complete mystery, and since there are about 32 years between ESB and TFA it, like the Falcon, could have ended up in many different hands before we saw it again in the new film.

The lightsaber has a high midichlorian count, the force talks to it constantly, telling it the will of the force. The saber is just like "I'm a hunk of metal mate, lay off." At least this is the impression I got from TFA.

FWIW, The duel in TPM was waaaay better than the Obi/Ani duel in ROTS, IMO. The latter had too much useless saber twirling and just looked like a video game because of all the green screen work.

When Kylo twirled his saber a couple times in TFA, it actually looked menacing. And perhaps a less-experienced fighter would be intimidated by it.

But there doesn't seem to be any point in so much turbo saber twirling in ROTS. This is only slightly exaggerated:

Something other than it floating in space randomly to be found I hope.

Agreed. There's no particular reason it should have ended up in space. It certainly wouldn't have floated into space if it fell all the way out of the Cloud City shaft.

There aren't enough Likes for this sentence.
Indeed. I absolutely agree with this statement. Anakin vs. Obi-wan felt like a low point in the choreography, because it felt like the catch-all for all the "cool" ideas that GL had had over the years.

I'd rather watch Duel of the Fates on my phone at a low data rate, than watch Anakin v. Obi-Wan in a theater.

Also, I don't much like the kicking. On one level it makes sense to throw in unexpected fighting manuevers in a lightsaber duel, like when Anakin grabs Dooku's wrists. I thought that worked. But if someone kicked out at me in a saber duel I'd be trying to chop their leg off.
