Edit: Got The Art book today: the fuck? A lot of the ideals and designs in the book are far and away better than what we go in the The Force Awakens.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie. But there's a lot of room for improvement. What the hell happened that we went from Epic Star Wars movie to, slightly better than Episode III and VI but not as good as IV or V

The more I reflect on it, the more I don't mind TFA being thematically and structurally similar to ANH.

I mean, "The Magnificent Seven" was a knock-off of "The Seven Samurai," but they're both very good and it's OK to like both of them. I think this is similar.

Something I haven't seen anyone mention yet...I thought I caught Hux calling Kylo "Ben," possibly as a taunt, in one of their scenes together...and that was before it was confirmed by Han that Ben was his name.

But remember: Destroying Death Stars is just like shooting womp rats.

And trench runs are just like Beggar's Canyon back home.

Anyway, this may be sacrilegious, but I'm sort of starting to feel like I might kind of enjoy the fast pace of TFA a little bit more than ANH on some level. Maybe.

^I know that feeling. On one hand you have a classic that started the whole thing and on the other you have basically the same story but with it's own twists, superior visuals, and a new(er) cast engaging in an all new(ish) adventure.

I took a break from the board for awhile, and it is going to take me ages to do any sort of catch up reading so I'm sorry for restating things that I'm sure have been said numerous times before...but...

I loved the movie. I had such a good time watching it. For me, it was a much needed course correction that actually brought me back into the fandom (I had been disappointed by RotJ and I hated the prequels...so I was pretty much "over" Star Wars).

This one brought me back. I was most involved with the original characters stories, but I became attached to the new characters very quickly. I enjoyed their interactions and totally believed their relationships (even Finn and Poe, who had so little screen time together, I still believed the bond between the 2 men).

I'm actually looking forward to watching the future adventures of this new core group, and I never thought I would be able to say that again!

I don't know if it has come up at all but right there at the end, as the Falcon came out of hyperspace, for a split second, I wondered if Abrams was going to put Luke & the first Jedi temple on Earth. Just for a second.

I watched RLMs review, and now I can never un-see the notion that Luke was taking a piss when Rey shows up at the end.

Here are my thoughts:
TFA was basically a rehash of ANH plus 30 years. There was literally nothing new that hadn't been done before, and that was it's failing.
1. Superweapon: ill-conceived supersized death star, handwaved in typical Abrams fashion.
Blowing up the starkiller base was even worse than blowing up the first death star. The whole thing felt forced; obviously the heroes were gonna win.
Han Solo being killed by Kylo Ren was a poor rehash of Ben Kenobi's death.
Captain Phasma was useless.

It's all about mass market entertainment rather than creative and engaging stories; this was as far from creative and engaging as possible.

Production and acting quality (except for snoke and ren) was excellent, but all you get is yet another entertaining mindless popcorn flick rather than a true sequel to the original star wars.
