^ Maz was well done. She reminded me of someone I know in real life. Has a similar name too.

Always wanted to see a TIE fighter up close. Why did it jus sink and blow up though? Looked like it was being eaten by a giant sand slug or something.
In a few years we will get a special addition that adds in a CGI monster pulling the fighter down. Don't worry. :guffaw:

Unlike the last film directed by JJ Abrams, Star Trek: Into Darkness, where I found myself pulled out of the immersion experience by moments that left me feeling baffled and disgusted, this film worked for me.

I do not think the planet destroyed was Coruscant (sic). For me, the destroyed planet did not have the appearance of a city planet. I would have liked to have known the name of this planet and/or its system. That is probably covered in the extended material.

Rey is not the child of Han and Leia. She could be the child of Luke; however, this is speculation. I felt awe when I saw Luke - his appearance aligned with my thoughts on what a Jedi would look like.

For me, Rey is the stronger of the two - Rey and Ben - and this is demonstrated throughout their encounters.

It is good to see a strong character, like Rey, who can be defined by something other than her sex.

It seems to me that the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance is in its early phases. Both sides are struggling at filling their ranks. Finn, before his first battle at Jakku, was in sanitation. The Resistance has a small number of fighters, and all of them are X-Wing derivatives.

Kylo Ren is young and inexperienced. He has not completed his training. And, he was wounded by Chewbecca and Finn before he fought Rey, so he was not in peak condition. And, Rey had a more centered personality than him and could call upon her inner emotional strength, and was able to resist the Dark Side.

Other things I like seeing
* Stormtroopers having personalities
* Diversity in Resistance pilots and ground support

I do not know if others had this experience. When I went to the theatre, there were cops present. They were there to protect the theatre employees and the audience members. The cop I saw when I left the auditorium was a good cop. His demeanour, and his eyes, told me this much about him. We said our hellos.

I might see the film again, after some time has passed. I felt stressed and overwhelmed by the crowds of people who had come to see the film.

I guess it was quicksand but vastly exaggerated for surprise and shock in the movie.

Maz was a nice CGI character and very colorful but i rolled my eyes slightly when started to be a light version of Yoda, even using his Force speech (though without the messed up grammar). I guess when you are around for 1000 years one tends to pickup some things including Jedi philosophy but it was still a little heavy handed to have her there when Rey had her Force vision and offer advice and mentoring.

A lot of dislike cropping up already. I get the feeling fans are going to spend the next 18 months arguing whether the movie was great, or sucked.

Personally I enjoyed the hell out of it, and want very much to see more of these new characters. My only real gripe has been mentioned before, namely wanting more backstory to find out how the SW universe got into its current state. Just where did the First Order come from? They certainly seem even more brutal than the Empire. And why is there a Republic and a Resistance?

Whats needed right now is a novel or two to fill in the gaps.

And we got the Warcraft trailer, which really did have the very worst 3D I've ever seen.

It looked exactly like flat cardboard characters stood at different distances from the camera. Horrible...

SPOILERS.

I had the same thought. This is my quickly jotted down "review" which can be read as The Force Awakens or A New Hope...

A young person living on a desert planet is caught up in adventure when they cross paths with a droid carrying vital plans for the rebellion.

During the adventure, they find out that they are Force-sensitive.

After a stop at a colourful watering hole, they head out, travelling with Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The female lead is captured and tortured for information. She then escapes with the help of Han Solo, Chewbacca, and the male lead.

A red-bladed bad guy kills a father figure in full-view of the male and female leads.

The rebels stage a daring attack on a gigantic planet-killing weapon.

After spending years hidden, Anakin’s lightsaber is returned to its rightful owner, Luke Skywalker.

I'm sure there's more, that's just off the top of my head. But I loved the film though, just for the record.

Well borrowing from other movies, Snoke's scenes were very reminiscent of Palpatine's scene in TESB, and Han got Darth Maul's death.

It occured to me that we never saw that shot of the Knights of Ren that was featured in all the trailers.

What if it was called reallyquicksand then?

Who saw it in 3D, thoughts?

I didn't bother myself, just went for 2D. I've nothing against 3D and used to always go for that option, but too many movies are now are needlessly in 3D so I can't be bothered spending that little extra anymore. So if I see this again would you say it was worth it?

IF one is going to see it again (I wouldn't, personally - I'm very annoyed - but that's me) - then yes, there is one scene with a star destroyer that pretty much makes the 3D aspect worth it, just by itself.

There were a couple of trailer shots I didn't recall seeing in the film. The Star Trek-esque reverse angle on the Falcon entering hyperspace, for one. The shot of Kylo Ren igniting his lightsaber among the trees on Starkiller Base. Those were the two obvious ones that stood out for me.

There were a lot of positives in this for me, but hey it's easy to focus on the negatives ain't it? ;)

Does anyone else get an Alien 3 kind of feeling after dwelling on the movie? In that some people dislike that as it spoiled the "happy" ending of Aliens by killing of Newt & Hicks. I just keep thinking of the end of Return of the Jedi where they're all there celebrating and happy, having a dance and a singsong with the Ewoks, fireworks going off…… it all just seems kinda moot now. 30 years on and there's still a frickin rebellion? And they've all had pretty horrible lives.

I get for dramatic purposes you have to do stuff like that, I'm just saying.. it's a bad sad, and rather than filling me with joy it actually left me a little down.

Was anyone else disappointed by the score? For a John Williams score, it was rather forgettable. The only things that stood out for me were the callbacks to classic themes.

At times it didin't feel like a Star Wars movie, the music was rather ow at times. But Daisey Ridley and John Boyega stole much of the movie and it was great seeing Han and Chewie together again. I also liked how Han and Leia's relationship had evolved, it seems as though like Luke they're all alittle ashamed of what happened to Ben.

There were alot of call backs to the OT movies, even the passing line of the stormtrooper saying that they think they've split up now on the base. Maz remined me of Linda Hunt though. They left some unanswered questions, like how'd they get Luke's lightsaber, although I liked Rey's vision showing some of the cloud city. And of course who're Rey's parents and why'd leave her on Jakku. And who Max Von Sydow's character was.

I found the map to rather odd, if Luke didn't want to be found why was there a map to where he hidden himself away? And why was it still around?

I agree. I might need to listen to it a few dozen times but there definitely wasn't anything like Duel of the Fates or the Imperial March.

I saw it last night. My major complaint was that it was just too fast paced. But that tends to be a trait with all of JJ's films.
Sure the overall story may have been a rehash, which was a weakness. but i LOVED the characters. I was sucked in with Finn and Rey from the get-go. They felt new and fresh to the star wars galaxy. I wouldnt of even missed Han and Chewie.
Another thing that kinda jarred me but in a good way: all the practical and real locations. These actors weren't walking around on green screen stages.
But i call bullshit on JJ saying this was a standalone film. It is far from it. I think once we see VII - IX together, this film will look alot better in hindsight with the story.
