Star Wars The Complete Encyclopedia Is Out!

Like I said Star Wars fan gobble up the non-fiction ones, hence the massive amount of them on the bookshelves at most book stores that I go to. I think its because the more flexible canon of Star Wars than the stiff Trek one that discounts practically everything.

Or maybe that Pocket didn't put a fraction of the effort into their offerings that the Lucas franchise pubisher does.

Don't get me wrong...I LOVE things like the TNG Tech Manual, BUT they don't have a fraction of the visual appeal to the "shelf surfer" that the "Essential Guides" or the "Visual Dictionaries" books do.

The difference is that if you applied the same rules to Star Wars, you'd end up with a very thin book. Star Wars is six films and a few cartoon shows. Most likely, if he was really pushed on the subject, Lucas would ignore the various Ewok shows and the Droids cartoon.

On the other hand, Star Trek is 704 television episodes, 22 animated episodes and eleven films. More than enough for a reference work.

The SW encyclopedia includes material from the Extended universe, though. That adds quite a bit of material, although it may be debated as to how well it fits.

That's my point - without the Expanded Universe the book would be a pamphlet.

I just found it on Amazon, it looks gorgeous. Sure, the argument can be made that this information is all available online on places like Wookieepedia but to me a book (or set of books) is more than just the information contained within.

Okay, I gotcha. An encyclopedia like this can be mroe useful because it cobbles together source material from a diverse collection of locations.

Wookieepedia is typically very strict about sourcing but I don't disagree. I'm sure these books will be referenced by Wookieepedia just as Memory Alpha references various Star Trek reference works.
