Wow! I admit, I was worried about another Death Star movie, but this trailer delivered. Like Rebels, it show that the Star Wars Universe has a diverse tapestry of characters, beyond those who orbit around the Skywalker family. The casting in this movie looks awesome. Felicity Jones looks like she's going to deliver an amazing performance as Jyn Erso. I loved her delivery of that one line. You know the one.

That was in fact the only thing I didn't like. The line, or it's delivery. Nor really the following "defiant" line-reading of "Yes Sir".

Miss Jones is a wonderful actress (Theory of Everything clearly shows that), but this little moment didn't sell for me. Forced. Stilted It was reminiscent of Daisey Ridley's poor line readings in some of the Tatooine sections of TFA where she is stilted and uneven in her delivery. I have no idea if these were some of the earlier shot sections of that film, but it felt like in those scenes she hadn't quite got a complete grip on the character. Perhaps the same here. Or perhaps a bit of missing context - forcing across a "hard line" to the management?

Still, one poor line poorly delivered a bad film does not make. Meanwhile Forrest Whittakers over-earnest line delivery is broad, grandiose and erring almost on the side of comical. Portentous and very similar in style to Maz Kanata's voiceover on TFA trailers. Wasn't sure if I was supposed to get goosebumps or giggle. I liked it though, cos, well, Forrest Whittaker...

Otherwise, it looks pretty much perfect. Much of the imagery just in the trailer has a classic feel to it and could stand up against any of the previous films - that shot of the man in the white cloak walking through the water is sublime (especially coupled with Vader's kneel)

The trick though will be pulling off a story where we feel for the characters much of whom, we can infer from ANH, are already doomed.

Hugo - will become a clock-watcher until December

They're making these movies that would've made my eyes pop out of my head as a kid.

I'm jealous of my own children - but I shouldn't be. I get to enjoy it too.

I want to see this movie now. Like, right now. Like I'm actually contemplating contracting a fatal disease and launching a Facebook campaign now.
That only works on Abrams, and he has nothing to do with this movie.

ANH gives no indication what happened to the people who stole the plans for the first Death Star. All we know is many Bothans died obtaining the plans to the second one. Indeed, if the guy with the moustache in the cast photo released last year is in fact Biggs as many have speculated it might be, that would indicate someone survives this operation, even if he ends up dying not long afterwards.

I have split feelings, for now. I agree her line delivery felt weak, but the action and tie in potential really woke me up.

I sensed something about it I have not felt since the OT. Is it because the material, the editing, or have they successfully recaptured the magic we all bemoan missing from the PT... I am cautiously optimistic.

Ok that was pretty damn cool. I really enjoyed TFA, but I'm finding the darker tone and style of this movie to be a lot more compelling so far.

And I thought Jones was fantastic myself. She's got a much darker edge to her than Rey did, and I totally bought her as this angry rebellious type which a chip on her shoulder.

And of course it doesn't hurt that the Empire of the OT is just inherently a LOT more threatening and menacing than the First Order of TFA. I freakin loved seeing the AT-ATs and red guards again, not to mention the freakin original Death Star.

I'm a bit surprised we didn't see even a hint of Vader in this (given what a massive selling point that would be for people), but I imagine they're just saving that for the full trailer.

Many Bothans died to bring us this trailer.

Don't know if it will be good but it looks decent enough so far.

I think it looks great. Is that Genevieve O'Reilly playing Mon Mothma again, from the ROTS deleted scenes? They've done a good job of progressing her toward Caroline Blakiston's appearance.

Someone in the YouTube comments section pointed out that the alarm wailing through the second half sounds unfortunately like a shrieking Jar Jar Binks. Now I can't unhear it.

I think it's the context. "Forcing across a 'hard line' to the management" is exactly the impression I got. It sounded forced because it was. Making yourself to say "Yes sir" when you aint used to saying it to nobody, can sound a little contrived. This was seconds (in the trailer) after Mon Mothma characterized her as, "On your own from the age of fifteen. Reckless, agressive, and undisciplined." And immediately after that fellow says "Is that clear?" in an unambiguously patronizing manner... Yeah, it sounded forced: probably because she'd rather have spit in his eye than say it out loud, for anyone (including her own ears and personal pride) to hear. My take. Sold me.

As for the previous lines about "rebellion", I couldn't see her face for any of the delivery other than the summation, "I rebel." Sounded a little smart ass, but then Mon Mothma's reaction summed that up instantly. It was. Maybe that's why they like her for this mission. :)

Someone up-thread mentioned that -- at the 1:18 mark -- the black-cloaked figure kneeling in front of the energy beam (flanked by red guards) is likely DV. Does anyone know who might have been cast? (presumably James Earl Jones was approached to voice).

Also, I'm wondering: what is the likelihood this will be the first SW film without a lightsaber duel?

There were rumours during the filming of Force Awakens that WWE Superstar Seamus had filmed a number of scenes under the robes as Vader. Would make sense, he would have a good physique for it. I wonder if the rumour mill just mixed up the movie he was meant for?

He's been voicing him in a recurring capacity on Rebels recently, so I'd say it's likely. That figure doesn't look like Vader to me though; it looks like robes and a hood. I wonder whether we'll see Ian McDiarmid and/or Jimmy Smits make an appearance?

Maybe not a duel, but if Vader's in it I'd be very surprised if he doesn't activate his lightsaber at some point, probably to kill a few rebels.

So is it just me, or does it kinda look like the rebels will be stealing the Death Star plans off the Death Star itself? For some reason I always assumed they stole them from some random Imperial facility somewhere, or maybe off a Star Destroyer or something.

And I have to admit, as cool as it is to see the Death Star and AT-ATs again, a part of me still prefers the idea of the rebellion only seeing those things for the first time in ANH and ESB...

Love seeing the AT-ATs! Actually, they're a slightly different model than the ones in ESB. The head especially is quite different.

Takes place during the first line of the opening Crawl of a New Hope

"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet..

Already people are moaning about Jyn's character

"Another female lead Mary Sue?"

"She's Rey's mom!"
