Star Wars Rebels Season Three (spoilers)

They've released a new trailer for the rest of the season, featuring Saw Gerrera, Mon Mothma, Sabine's mother, Death Troopers, and........a certain Jedi who has history with Maul.

Looks Amazing!

I'm almost done with the Season 2 DVDs from Netflix, and I'm finding myself very very tempted to just buy Season 3. I don't know if I can wait until it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray. I really wish Amazon or Google let you rent the digital versions of TV episodes like you can movies.

Oh Rebels, never change. Anything but mediocrity would just be too big a shock at this point. Thrawn being a hand to hand fighter so misses the point that, even for Rebels, its surprising. Also, I'm glad I'm mostly numb to Rebels/TCW treatment of "Mandalorians", otherwise having the fake mandalorians apparently worship the freaking dark saber would probably make me lose my mind. But, one deep breath and a reminder that they aren't the real mandalorians, and its more of a "so stupid I have to laugh" thing.

One thing I really noticed is that that their Obi-Wan voice is terrible. They should have just gotten the TCW actor back. Old Obi-Wan sounding like young Obi-Wan would probably be preferable to someone doing a bad Alec Guinness impersonation. Then again, anyone who could do a good Alec Guinness would be too good an actor to work on Rebels, so I suppose they get what they deserve in that case.

Did they recast James Arnold Taylor, or did he suddenly become *much* better at impersonating Sir Alec Guinness?
*googles*
Yup and apparently that's Stephen Stanton, who also plays animated Tarkin (not to be confused necromantically animated Tarkin) and was the voice of Admiral Raddus in Rogue One. That's so weird and awesome.

So a lightsaber and (apparently lightwhip!) wielding Mandalorian trained by a Jedi, uniting the clans to join the rebellion? Is it bad that I don't even care how utterly fan-wanky that sounds on paper? ;)

Between this, Rogue One and some of the recent novels, I never thought I'd see Dornean gunships getting so much love. For the longest time it was always something of a unicorn in the RotJ fleet scenes.

ETA: Am I crazy, or did they slip Yularen in there too?

The old games always ignored that gunships (probably because it looked more like something out of Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rodgers by the time it shows up in Return of the Jedi for seconds at the most). I wasn't really aware of it until Rogue One pointed it back out. I don't even know where in the galaxy that ship is suppose to be from.

The fleet is impressive, but tiny compared to Thrawn's superior tactics and firepower. He's using not only at least six Imperial Star Destroyers, but also an Interdictor cruiser to keep the Rebels from escaping. Add to this the TIE Interceptors and TIE Defender, and you have the potential for a lot of dead rebels and the loss of several ships a few years before the Battle of Scariff/Battle of Yavin times. I definitely saw an MC80 star cruiser with the fleet (as oppose to the MC75 we see in Rogue One). It seems the Mon Calamari joined the rebellion, but it is going to take time to refit their escape city-ships, cruise liners, and the explore ships for service as capital ships. By Endor they have at least a half dozen ready, minus loses over the course of the six years or so of the war at that point from this season of Rebels until the Battle of Endor.

I don't think it's a lack of ability; Taylor's Kenobi was intentionally a hybrid of McGregor's and Guinness's performances, skewed toward the former due to the time frame, so we've never heard him trying to do straight-up Guinness, as far as I know.

Apparently it is, otherwise they would have kept him in the role. One would think as a courtesy they at least let him have a go, just to see if he could pull it off. If so, then clearly he couldn't because they got someone better at it. QED

Not necessarily; sometimes voice actors have to give up roles due to availability or scheduling issues.

Anyway, my point was about the performance Taylor did do, not the one he didn't. You asked "did he suddenly become *much* better at impersonating Sir Alec Guinness," which implies you're assuming that he was trying to sound like Guinness and doing a poor job of it. My point is that he was actually trying to sound like Ewan McGregor with elements of Guinness, and I think he did that quite well.

An interesting question will be, where do all these ships come from? What cells were they part of before joining Mon Mothma's new Alliance? I can understand the Mon Calamari ships easily enough, and we know where Phoenix Group is getting their stuff, but where did those frigates and gunships come form? Part of Dodanna's group? The still unknown Corellian rebels? Saw's faction?

Also I notice a lack of X-wings in this trailer. A-wings, Y-wings, and Mandalorean fighters only for the Rebels.

Wow... That has restored my interest in the current season... I was a little ho-hum about it so far, but that really looks good... And I could have sworn that was Sir Alec's voice.. Most impressive impersonation.. At least for that snippet... Count me in!!

Chris mate, just letting you know that you're doing that thing again where you're taking an off-hand comment and getting *really* unnecessarily pedantic about it.

I'm not disparaging JAT, just noting a notable jump in the level Alec Guinnessness that I'm finding somewhat note worthy. Just as a side note. So relax. Breath.

I get the impression that Dodanna is to Mon Mothma what Sato is to Bail Organa. If so then what we're seeing is those two cells together for the first time. As to where they're all from: well consider that the Phoenix cell is made up of several smaller cells that Bail & Ahsoka were backing (recall that Bail said the ships that turned up at Mustafar were from other cells, plural.) One assumes Mon was doing much the same thing in parallel.

If it's any indication, Dodanna was from Commenor which in the the colonies region between the inner rim & core worlds. It's not said where in the galaxy Sato's homeworld Mykapo is located, but it's a fair bet it's in the outer rim like Lothal.
With that in mind it seems reasonable to suppose that Mon Mothma & Dodanna's cells were more corewards while Bail covered the outer rim.
The Mon Cala with their capital ships are probably a cell all unto themselves and probably didn't particularly need as much shepherding as some of the other factions.

From his brief appearance in 'Catalyst', it seems Saw at least started out as something of a free agent, doing for others in the galaxy what the Jedi did for him. So pretty much what Ahsoka was doing as Fulcrum, ironically. When and how that changed we've yet to see, but at least we don't have long to wait now. ;)

Also I notice a lack of X-wings in this trailer. A-wings, Y-wings, and Mandalorean fighters only for the Rebels.

I think it's safe to say they're saving the X-wings for later. Can't wait too long though since we're now only two years out from RO/ANH, so probably next season at the latest.
Especially considering ...
...Saw had at least a few of them with his partisans on Jedah and he seemed to have split with the Alliance some time prior.

Ooh, so cool. The ending with Obi-Wan is definitely the highlight, but I also love the Thrawn stuff, especially when he fires off that blaster rifle.

Yularen is seen running with Stormtropers at 2:39.

Very excited for Rebels return. And very cool to have Stanton playing Obi-Wan again. (As well as having done his voice for a few video games, he also played the role in the excellent Pink Five fan films.)

If it is Yularen, it'll be interesting how they depict him, given he was essentially a good guy in Clone Wars, it'll seem odd for him to be a bad guy here, especially given he didn't have the dramatic lifestyle change Anakin did in the intervening decades. One possibility, I remember the voice actor from Clone Wars discussing the matter, claiming he viewed Yularen during his Imperial career as being a sort of Imperial Rommel type figure. I doubt they'll take that literally, but it would be interesting to show a decent person on the Empire's side. Alas, I doubt they'll focus on him in-depth anyway in his Rebels appearance.

Yularen was on the Death Star in A New Hope on Tarkin's council. He's the officer in white and part of the ISB as oppose to the Navy, last I heard.

I'd say Yularen was only nominally a "good guy" in the sense he was on the same side of our protagonists. All we really know about him is that he's a professional naval officer who had little patience for Anakin's shenanigans and wasn't actively an arsehole.

IIRC the 'Tarkin' novel mentioned that after the war, Yularen eschew advancement as a fleet officer for a leading role in the Imperial Security Bureau and ended up being the liaison between ISB and Military Intelligence. Interestingly I think it's mentioned he specialised in cracking down on acts of sedition in the Senate. So there's a chance that he and Mom Mothma (who should be on the run by this point) have something of a history.

Random observation: If I'm reading it right, I think Kenobi knew Maul was coming and was waiting for him. Note earlier in the trailer there's a brief shot of a desert with a figure in the distance. I suspect he lead Maul far out into the dune sea to ensure they'd have privacy and that there'd be no chance of endangering Luke.

Slightly less random observation: Am I hearing things, or is Forest Whitaker actually mimicking the speach pattern Dawn-Lyen Gardner adopted in TCW? If so that's very cool and surprising...if a little out of step with his flashback scenes in RO.
