Star Wars Rebels Season One (spoilers)

In a comment over at io9 I said Rebels is reminding me of Firefly an awful lot (which isn't a bad thing) and that Kanan=Mal, Hera=A cross between Inara and Wash, Sabine=Kaylee, Zeb=Jayne and that I guess Ezra fits Simon's fish out of water trope - but now Ezra is feeling more like River in the sense of the "untapped supernatural kid" thing.

That's what I thought tonight, though I saw Hera more as Zoe.

Eh, a Mix of both. I said Inara because Hera is very much Kanan's Love interest.

Wow, lots to love about tonights episode. Good action, good humor, a REAL badass of a villain, and even some character development.

I confess I'm rather taken with Kanan's fighting style. A mix of force powers, and good old fashioned brawling.

And oh lord, that picture of the senator on the holonet. I'm old enough to get the reference and lol'ed.

And holy crap, the droid is still a dick. Someone needs to feed the little bastard a restraining bolt.

Yeah the fourth episode is definitely the best one yet. The Inquisitor finally made a proper appearance and proved to be a pretty intimidating villain, and there was a seriousness to the story that was nice to see as well.

I'm still hoping to see Hera do more than just pilot the ship though. And yeah, Chopper is officially a major asshole now (although I have to admit he did crack me up a few times in this episode).

And the Vader appearance at the start of the premiere was just freakin awesome. Even if it's just in animated form, it was still amazing to hear Jones voice the character again. And it also helped to raise the stakes a bit and make the Empire feel a little more dangerous than it did in the original version of the episode as well. Since it's now clearer than ever that Vader is hovering out there somewhere and monitoring the situation with these rebels.

There are those that probably think Artoo sounds silly and annoying too.

At least Artoo's "language" sounds complicated enough that it's believable as a form of communication.
Others would disagree. I recall more than one person over the years saying that all Artoo does is make silly noises that make no sense.

But then, most of us have had nearly 40 years to become accustomed to Artoo's noises while Chopper is a new arrival.

Also I'm confused--what Vader scene?

Sunday evening was the Prolouge Version - Spark of Rebellion episode which was broadcast on ABC. For anyone that missed it, the opening shot which pans down on Ezra's tower is preceded by the following:

A slow pan up on one Star Destroyer as two others pass underneath it. The Inqusitor speaks with Vader via hologram alone somewhere aboard the ship. Vader is visible only by his head and speaks slowly and clearly. The Inqusitor looks downward, eyes closed throughout the conversation.

VADER:
The Jedi knights are all but destroyed - and yet your task is not complete, Inqusitor. The Emperor has forseen a new threat rising against him. The Children of the Force. They must not become Jedi.

THE INQUISITOR:
Yes, Lord Vader.

VADER:
Hunt down this new enemy - and if they will not serve the Empire, eliminate them along with any surviving Jedi who were training them. This is my master's command.

THE INQUSITOR:
And so it will be done.

Vader's image flickers and the hologram shuts off. The Inquisitor looks up, revealing his distinctive yellow Pau'an eyes.

I timed the entire exchange at :57 before it fades into Ezra's tower.
The music at the very beginning - not sure of the track's name but it is played during ESB during certain scenes around Cloud City - like when Lando's troops ambush the Stormtroopers and take their blasters.

As a Canadian, it was thrilling and a relief to see this Rebels extended premiere actually broadcast instead of being subject to the "cable tv switcheroo" in which you end up with a shitty infomercial taking place of the actual channel guide entry. So I snared it forever on the ol' PVR. Does anyone think the ABC broadcast was darker? Maybe it's my TV.

I loved how the scissor effect of Star Destroyers conjured up an image of the meditation chamber Vader used in ESB. When Vader said that the knights had all been destroyed, it was kind of a letdown to think that there won't be much hunting-down of Jedi... but then I realized of course Vader would say that. Propaganda is a huge part of running an empire, after all. So we still may yet see a surviving Jedi knight or two besides Kanan. I liked this command from Vader because it does give The Inqusitor a reason to keep captives alive. Maybe we'll see Kanan or Ezra eventually join with him (only to betray him).

Rated G. Was this the same rating for Disney XD?
Not sure if anyone's noticed, the episode titles are listed on the second card of the credits above the executive producers.

They showed Star Destroyers scissoring and it was rated G? :wtf:

Just wanted to echo:

I also thought episode 4 was the best one yet. And, I did like the character development...and a little bit of darkness utilizing the deceased Jedi Luminari as a lure.

Other stuff I liked:
I still find it clever how they tend to squeeze in musical bits from the original trilogy. And, I found it interesting how they broke down Yoda's "Do or do not" saying.

Lastly, the final scene with the Jedi training recommencing was touching; The Force theme playing on the soundtrack.

Yeah it was kind of cute how the "training" at the end basically looked like a father throwing baseballs to his son in the park.

And there was also a LOT of really nice animation in this, with some wonderfully atmospheric settings (the ship hovering in the clouds at the beginning, and the dark and moody prison planet), and also some really well directed action sequences.

It's definitely about time they gave Ezra a real blaster though. Kind of hard to believe Kanan would bring him into a heavily armed Imperial prison with nothing but his wimpy slingshot to protect him. Although I suppose Disney might not have wanted to see a teenage kid running around with a gun on the show...

^I like the laser slingshot. My ten year old self would have loved it. Doesn't seem very effective against storm trooper armor though, so categorizing it as "wimpy" is probably accurate.

Having just rewatched "Spark of Rebellion" on the proper TV earlier here in the UK, his laser slingshot definitely manages to knock that Stormtrooper off the ledge at the end (that Kanan then shoves Kallus off of), so either they nerfed it, the empire got wise to it, or whatever. It certainly worked well as a distraction then though. There's already a Toy image out there of Ezra's "Lightsaber" which is disguised as a blaster gun, so at some point he will graduate from the taser slingshot to a full blown lightsaber blaster.

Yeah I certainly don't have a problem with the slingshot. I just think it strains credibility a bit to think Kanan and the rest would bring him along on so many dangerous missions without giving him something a bit more powerful to defend himself with first.

At any rate, I look forward to seeing how he comes up with his lightsaber, er, I mean "laser sword" (even though Obi-Wan had no problem calling it a lightsaber in ANH, but anyway...). Are they going to keep to the Jedi tradition and make Ezra travel through that ice maze from TCW to get the crystal I wonder?

Eh, he seems to manage well enough without one. And I'm sure they don't totally trust him to handle himself quite yet. Or maybe he doesn't want one? There's certainly never been a shortage of stormtrooper guns to pick up.

Eh, but it is a laser sword. He was just being more informal in not calling it by its proper name.

Yeah, my interpretation from previous mentions of "laser-sword" in the prequel films and The Clone Wars, it is meant to be an "outsider" term from someone who would be ignorant to the ways of the Jedi. I'm pretty sure it's used in Rebels sarcastically. I've read some serious rancor on the information superhighway in the past few days in regards to that term being used on Rebels.

Possibly, but I think it's more that Filoni just really liked the old-school term that Lucas always used for them, and thought it would fit better with the show's retro, McQuarrie-inspired style.

Rise of the Old Masters was great. By some small miracle I was NOT spoiled about Luminara and that was a huge shock to me. I was assuming she had fallen to the dark side or was brain washed. Damn.

But why would Kanan sense her presence if she was dead? I've never heard of a Jedi sensing a corpse before without realizing it.

I don't like the thin lightsabers though. I like 'em thick. That's what gets me going.

My cable's On Demand service has once again released next week's episode a week in advance, absent commercials.

I hope this remains the norm for the rest of the season. :)

But why would Kanan sense her presence if she was dead? I've never heard of a Jedi sensing a corpse before without realizing it.

Yeah I was wondering that too. But maybe before she died they found some way to extract or contain her force energy before it could move on, so it could be used as a lure for other Jedi.

Or maybe their energy doesn't actually leave the body and move on until they've been cremated in one of those giant bonfires they like so much.
