Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - New Single Player, Story Driven Game

It's ok....

Better than Battlefield.

Still... it's a little dated gameplay wise.

Its 2019. We should be getting open world games.

Really not impressed with EA. In fact I fucking despise them.

All this time they had the contract and we Battlefield and this plus a smattering of shitty mobile games.

I would of expected by now:
A multiplayer FPS game ( ok they dont this)
A open world RPG.
A FPS single player a game.
A grand strategy game.
A tactical strategy game.
A story lead RPG (Fallen order)

EA need to lose the Starwars contract!

Yeah, I've been amazed how little EA has done with the Star Wars license. When they first announced they got it, I expected them to just start pumping out tons of games.

Depending on LucasFilm's other contracts with the studios who do the Lego games, it might limit what EA can do.

Contracts are weird like that.

Anybody got this yet? It came out today.
I'm not sure when I'm going to get around to playing this, I already got the year subscription to Disney+ on Tuesday and that was already more money than I should be spending right now.

Meh. The environments look good, and feel like Star Wars. The level design is solid, if not groundbreaking, and the traversal elements feel pretty smooth although the reliance on platforming got old as I've moved deeper into the game. I've enjoyed the puzzles that I've come across so far, for the most part.

The story is pretty good. Cal is a bit of a cypher, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. And I've enjoyed the side characters, for the most part. I'm not sure how much I have left, but hopefully the ending doesn't disappoint.

But the combat kind of sucks. I've heard it compared to Sekiro, but I never played that so I can't speak it myself. It feels like a reverse-Bloodbourne. Rather than reward you for being aggressive, it wants you to play incredibly passively. You can block the overwhelming majority of attacks at little to no meaningful cost, and your best tools for combating enemies are your dodge and your parry. It feels a lot like rote memorization. This enemy does this, so we wait for that move. That enemy does that, so we wait for the weaker part of it's pattern. It has almost no real depth once you get the timing down. You can legitimately defeat every single enemy in the game with the tools you are given in the first 5 minutes.

Which isn't to say that it's easy. I'm playing on Jedi Master difficulty (the 2nd highest) and the game loves throwing crowds and mobs of enemies at you. They are pretty aggressive and will hunt you down so long as they can reach you. But most of the strategy in the game is in picking what order to take down the enemies in. I found easiest to most challenging is pretty much foolproof. Run from anything that needs thought, kill the simplest enemies first, and work your way to the bigger ones as the pack whittles down. I died quite a bit early on, but once I got the idea the game became much simpler. Been killed a lot more by the platforming sections, honestly. Which thankfully have much lower costs to dying.

Also, a ton of the play time is padded out by forcing you to retread paths you've already taken, either to return to your ship after completing an objective or to open a previously unavailable path to reach a new one. The map is solid, so it's not that bad. But if you find yourself dying a lot, or using a lot of the healing items which you can refresh at save points, you're in for a long go of it. Every time you refresh your healing stims all the enemies in the level respawn.

Honestly, while I'm not at all sorry I've played it, and I have largely enjoyed the experience overall, Control made me feel more like a Jedi than this ever has. It's a good single player game, but it's definitely not a great one.

I think the game does at least one important thing, it let EA perform damage control on their SW license. It's a solid game, and has already repaired much of the ill will that EA has quite rightly earned. Hasn't repaired all of it, of course...but if they continue to have the sense to farm out their SW titles we could get some great games going forward.

I was pretty happy with the game. The negatives (or neutrals) didn't stop me from finishing with a sense of having had a lot of fun, and liking the story they told.

Mine feels plenty jedi running it story-mode.

Finished this up this morning, and I'm going to largely agree with this is. I stand by my earlier criticisms, the combat in particular is without depth. I wish they had invested more time in both the swordplay and the Force. But the story is strong, and well delivered. I thought the ending was quite good and did right by both the characters and the player.

It's a solid effort. And it IS a good game. Not a great one, it's flawed. But there is fun to be had here.

Hasn't repaired anything for me yet.

Not until I get a solid strategy game.

I don't think EA has any interest in any more games like Fallen Hero. Pretty much everything from them now has to be a "game as a service" and loaded with microtransactions. Luck was that Respawn was far enough along in development to not throw Fallen Hero away when bought by EA.

Insiders are saying EA is more receptive to the SP games because of how well Fallen Order is doing.

Also EA bought Respawn, meaning they had all the power over the company and could have put MTX in it, but didn't.

Is there some specific issue you have with it, or are you just not a gamer?

My mom got me the game as a Solstice present (we do that instead of Christmas), and I started it. So far it's pretty fun, I just made it to the first vault.
I do find it a little funny that Cameron Monoghan, who plays Cal, is the second actor to play both the Joker and a Jedi. Although he did it in the reverse order of Mark Hamill, with Joker first then the Jedi.

It's taking me a little while to get down the timing for blocking and attacking, but after 2 or 3 hours I'm already improving a lot.
