Star Wars: Here we go again...

Yet another rumor for a 'sequel trilogy'

http://iesb.net/index.php?option=co...r-wars-movies-planned&catid=41:news&Itemid=71

This is not to be confused with the 3-D rereleases.

We've heard this rumor many, many, times over the years-so grain of salt. Maybe it has something to do with the live-action TV series not being released as planned, although the article makes clear it's still set to go.

It taking place possibly a century or millenia later is an interesting idea, although one that's been done in the Legacy comic series.

Doing an animated (Clone Wars-style) movies-length adaptation of Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy would seem like a no-brainer to me. They are, without doubt, the best and most well-respected EU novels currently available. Personally, I would pay big money see anything on the big screen that featured Thrawn (and especially, Mara Jade )

Apparently, iesb.net is having "issues" at the moment. TFN has a blurb, though. At this point, I'm fine with another trilogy -- provided it's given more care and craft than the PT. Perhaps Lucas has learned from the experience and is eager to leave audiences with a better "final" impression of Star Wars on film?

If any of this is true, I wouldn't mind seeing, preferably in animation:

Knights of the Old Republic
The Old Republic (maybe)
Force Unleashed
Dark Empire
Thrawn
NJO

For live action, I think they should just go beyond the timeline established by Legacy comics. No need to crap over the EU and just let the post-ROTJ stuff remain 'canon'. Also, skipping far ahead into the future frees Lucas up from having to rely on the aging OT actors (though all that are willing, I would like to see them in the new films in some capacity).

Well, according to the article:

Too early for story details but one thing that our source is certain about, they will not be prequels but instead sequels. It's not for certain if they will be the long awaited Episodes 7, 8 and 9 but could instead be Episodes 10, 11 and 12 or possibly even further out in the Star Wars timeline. And by giving space in the timeline, possibly even as far as 100 years or 1,000 years in the Star Wars universe future, Lucas avoids having to make these stories "fit in" with what the previous stories have told.

It'd make sense to leave the whole Skywalker storyline behind. New trilogy, new characters. New possibilities.

If it's a sequel, it will have to be quite a bit further ahead in the timeline, given the age of the actors and the fact that it would be difficult to get Harrison Ford to return. Could be fun, though. I'm always up for more Star Wars. I even liked the PT. ;)

What's strange is, Lonemagpie, I was just on Kotaku and they linked me to the article -- and it came up. Not sure what to make of it, but yeah, I'm totally not going to believe this until there's substantial evidence to support it.

A sequel trilogy or a remake of the original trilogy will happen eventually... I just doubt either happens during Lucas' lifetime.

I'm amused by the characterization of Skywalker Ranch as "ultra top-secret," considering the number of filmmakers who go in and out of there all the time.

[...] the original article has been disappeared from iesb.com
The website may not be loading properly right now, but I don't think the article has "been disappeared." After I was finally able to load the article page itself, a link to it on their "latest headlines" menu was still visible.

I can't get the original iesb article to come up. It claims some kind of database error when trying to get to it.

I get an error message at that link. Damn Sith! :klingon:

Anyway, if it's possible to recast Spock successfully, it's possible to recast any of the Star Wars characters, even Han (I see him as the biggest challenge - it would be far too easy to lazily just slap any old space cowboy in that role.) Luke and Leia are more "types" that could be handled by a lot of talented actors - the wide-eyed innocent who grows into a hero and the ass-kicking bitchy Girl Friday who rejects her heritage, succumbs to hatred and becomes a Sith. Hah hah, anyway that's my version of story, perhaps not the one they will go for, but they should at least give it serious consideration.

But don't foist new characters on us for the sequel. That removes the whole point of the sequel, which is to see Star Wars' best characters in action again. And to turn Leia into a Sith.

There seems to be a coordinated effort to continue to "train" new fans of the franchise, George alluded to it in his interview with Jon Stewart at Celebration. Ever since the EU "started" there has been a steady dreambeat of new Star Wars, on a pretty consistent clip. Once Clone Wars, and the 3D ReReleases are done they will need a new way to keep their cash cow bringing in the big bucks.

Perhaps this sequel trilogy takes over for the now defunct live action "dark times" TV series as the next step?

My hope is that George only writes a 1st "plot" draft then passes it off to a better screenwriter who can stick to the George's general plot and put in good dialogue and good pacing and not an endless series of arrivals and departures. I swear to god, like half of the Prequel trilogy (especially Revenge) is abnormally long establishing shots of people departing, arriving, leaving ships, going into ships, walking from place to place, all in excruciating detail. Wasn't editing supposed to be George Lucas' specialty?

Read Rinzler's Making of Empire Strikes Back (just released, great coffee table book). it goes through and summarizes all of the different drafts of Empire. After ditching Brackett's 1st draft, Lucas wrote the 2nd draft himself, with plot that more or less follows the filmed version, but with some really clunky overlong dialogue, and then passed it off to Kasdan. After each draft, Lucas, Kasdan, and Kershner would lock themselves in a penthouse and go through bit by bit, challenging each scene, line of dialogue, etc, whipping it into shape. IMO, the bits of dialogue Rinzler posts from George's draft... sound awfully lot like prequel dialogue.
