Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I'm loving all of the new details coming out. Even if they aren't all 100% accurate (more likely than not), it's a good bet that there's a grain of truth to all of them (having sorted through the ROTS spoilers I can say this is very likely, even if some of these ideas end up on the cutting room floor). As such, we're beginning to get a decent rough overview of the film. And I like what I'm hearing so far.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

This is the most excited I've been about any official Star Wars production since, oh, 1998 and 1999. Add in the factors of Original Trilogy characters returning and Lawrence Kasdan being involved and it's just a great time to be a sci-fi/fantasy fan.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I was completely spoiler free for Revenge of the Sith. What were the false rumors that went out about that?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

A few speculated that Anakin would end up in the Darth Vader armor early in the film and spend most of the movie as the cyborg we knew from the original films, but I can't remember many specific plot rumors.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Well so far most of this (costumes, planets, villains, or even the basic plot itself) is stuff that will likely be revealed in the numerous trailers for the movie anyway. Or hell, even with the toys they release months beforehand at your local Target.

These days, the only thing I would consider a true spoiler is learning about huge plot twists or specific actions that the characters take in the story. Or, you know, how they defeat the villain at the end.

As long as we stay away from that stuff, I have no problem with all the stuff that's being leaked about it.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I find it interesting that the plot, if true,is pretty much the opposite of what happens post-ROTJ in the Expanded Universe, so it's no wonder it was dropped. In the EU, we have the characters pretty much settle down, raise families etc. and Luke rebuilds the Jedi Order. Sure, there's some tragedies and setbacks along the way but the heroes stick together well into middle age. Here however, it seems that the heroes have drifted apart, although we still don't know much about Leia's role in the movie to really know yet. Also while the heroes in the EU eventually resign, it looks like at least Han kept his rebel alliance rank, hence the rumors about him commanding a Star Destroyer. Also this inquisiter rumor, I wonder if we'll have any info about that in the coming Lords of the Sith canon novel. The new story also seems to borrow somewhat from Lucas's original outline from the sequel trilogy, which also had the heroes drift apart, so I guess they're still using some of his ideas after all.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Maybe he meant SW IV (The original/Episode number) and ROTS being better than the first two?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Episode III has its flaws and plenty to go around but it's still the best of the Prequels and a better movie than, oh, Avatar. Much better.

But that's another thread entirely. :p

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

And while I like the general idea of the Inquisitors, it does seem a bit weird to go back and rewrite the history of the earlier movies and the Sith like they are.
 It seems like the old EU is what's being overwritten, if anything.

Which is probably preferable as at least it'll be a largely original story.

If you want the EU take the books are still there.

I actually liked Avatar a lot, probably better or at least on the same level as ROTS (and I only ever saw it on DVD, so its not like the effects dazzled me or anything). Then again, never having seen movies like dances with wolves, its story was less familiar to me than it probably was to a lot of people. Its not an amazing movie by any stretch, but I thought it was decently entertaining.

Well they're talking about there being this whole other element and villain we had never seen before during the OT, who was tied in with the Sith and had been serving and working with Vader the entire time. And who are now apparently trying to restore the Sith.

It's definitely a cool idea, but it does feel like something that could change some of the established context and history a bit. Especially considering Vader and Palpatine (and numerous Imperial officers) never made any mention of these Inquisitors before, over the course of three movies.

That it would be good.
Compared to the previous two films it was easily at least as good as ST IV. ;)
Compared to poop, taco bell is fine dining. Doesn't mean I would find a beefy taco supreme acceptable if I took my lady out for a nice dinner. Including absolute shit on any scale is going to skew it.

I found all three to be terrible though, TBH, each in their own special way.

But that's what I don't get. Vader & Co. never mentioning them doesn't exactly qualify as "established context and history". The act of not saying something doesn't have the power to establish anything.
