Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Anchorhead is the location of Tosche Station, both of which were mentioned by Luke and actually seen in the famous Luke-Biggs-Camie-Fixer deleted sequence from the original film.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I would personally draw the line at using stop motion for creatures. It's great for something like Wallace and Grommet, but when you are trying to portray the realistic movement of a living creature I still think it falls short. The Rancor scene in ROTJ is one of the few scenes that took me out of the movie. The Imperial Walkers in Empire looked good, but then again I'm a big fan of model work.

Not to be nitpicky, but the Rancor wasn't stop-motion. It was a rod puppet shot with a high speed camera.

Now that I think about the scene I can see that you are right. The movement was more fluid that stop motion. I think it was the blue screen element that distracted me. Damn faulty memory!

Perhaps, but to me there is something just so incredibly boring and predictable about CGI creatures in movies these days. No matter how well detailed, you're always aware that you're just watching a collection of computer pixels being moved around. And the creatures all seem to look and act in the same basic way, as if all programmed by the exact same person.

The Rancor may have looked like a puppet, but at least it existed in a real space and had a truly unique presence about it.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Don't get me wrong, I get what you're saying. I just don't like the jerkiness and unnatural movements that come with stop motion creatures.

Perhaps if they approached it like they did for the dinosaurs in Jurassic park. I think they used a combination of all of the above mentioned methods. Of course I could be wrong.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Jurassic Park used a comination of CGI and animatronics. Stop motion was tried at first but rejected.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I think it also depends on what the technique is used for. The slightly herky-jerky movement of stop-motion arguably worked really well for the Imperial Walkers, emphasizing their mechanical nature.

On another note, I was looking through those pictures again and I spotted what looks like a moisture vaporator in one of them. Awesome.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The stop motion jerkiness I think actually worked in favor for the 3-d chess.

Ditto on spotting the moisture vaporator!

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The puppetry used for the Rancor was very effective and thrilling, except for the awful and painfully obvious matte lines around the edge of the puppet in scenes where it shares the screen with Luke. One of the good changes made by the DVDs and Blu Rays was the digital erasure of those old matte lines.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Those pictures are pretty cool. Its really nice to see them using practical effects, although CGI definately has its advantages and its place so I'd hope that CGI isn't completely off the table if they do things like space battles (models can be cool for that too, but one thing Episode 3 did very well was its opening CG space battle which had an epicness I don't think they could do with just models).

I think the film is going to look very good. I'm also becoming more hopeful that the film itself might be good, a change in attitude which probably means the water supply has been tainted and my whole town is going to become Reavers or zombies

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Wow. Brienne AND Lupita Nyongo? I approve of both. Incidently, Lupita reminds me sort of of that Asajj Ventress in terms of look and facial structure.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I watched the report on TMZ and apparently that huge pig creature contains five people who operate it's movement. It can even run.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I love the additions as well, although with all of these new actors (who are talented enough not to just have small background parts) I'm starting to wonder just how huge and complex this new storyline is.

I was kinda hoping to return to the simpler style of storytelling of the OT, where you just followed a handful of characters on an adventure. But it's looking like that probably won't be the case here.

Starring Ron Jeremy (right) as infamous bounty hunter "The Hedgehog," who infiltrates his target's lairs by pretending to be the galaxy's hairiest pizza delivery boy.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It'd still be better casting than Justin Long in a Die Hard movie.

Or most of the movies he's in.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That really does sound like a lot of actors but let's look at how many major characters there were in Revenge of the Sith:

Anakin. Obi-Wan. Padme. Palpatine. Yoda. Bail Organa. Mace Windu. Dooku. Grevious. Clones. 3PO and R2. not to mention all the cameos and Jedi.

That's about ten major characters.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Methinks that comparison isn't exactly encouraging to the people with the strongest doubts.
