Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I'll be kind of grateful if Abrams takes his usual approach of tight-lipped secrecy. With each of the Prequels I promised myself I'd go spoiler-free and I always failed. When it comes to Star Wars spoilers I have all the willpower of a heroin addict.

The era of the Internet has made remaining completely spoiler-free for an extended period of time almost impossible short of turning off all your electronic connections to the outside world and avoiding looking at magazine and newspaper headlines. I don't actively avoid spoilers most of the time but even if I desired to I just don't see how I could pull it off with any measure of success in the age of smartphones, tablets, social media and people just generally blabbing about every pop culture and entertainment story they just heard.

That's true...somewhat.

When Star Trek Into Darkness premiered I wanted to remain spoiler-free. Even though I saw a few clips, I didn't watch or read any reviews. (I was disappointed with the final product, however).

In regards to Star Wars, I remember when there was a big deal made abut the return after 20 years that different clips were continually shown on television, along with interviews. By the time I finally saw the movie in theaters, it was scenes filling in gaps that weren't shown in the televised clips.....(And, the final product was a disappointment).

On the other hand, Captain America 2 had a few photos of the set and Anthony Mackie's Falcon when the film was in production. Being highly disappointed with the first film, I didn't think Winter Soldier was going to be anything worthwhile. However, after watching reviews and word of mouth, and hearing that Anthony Mackie and Sam Jackson both had awesome roles....I decided to take the plunge...and wasn't disappointed. (It helped that there was a strong screenplay and awesome direction).

It's difficult to keep a full lid on a film production, but not impossible.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I wouldn't want to learn any plot details, but I have no problem whatsoever being spoiled on characters, costumes, props, etc.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

A national tabloid magazine spoiled much of the plot for Generations 20 years ago. It was a month or two before the movie was released, I was in line at a supermarket and happened to notice that the tabloid had pictures from and an article on the new Trek film. Within a few minutes I knew about Kirk's supposed death during the launch of the new Enterprise-B and that he didn't actually die until the end of the movie, after he'd come into the 24th century.

I had mixed feelings about knowing so many spoilers that turned out to be correct, but those are the risks a fan takes when they pick up a magazine or visit Facebook. I suppose every scene in Generations would have been made public long before the fall of '94 had social media existed at the time. Trek fans love to dig up clues and tell others no matter which decade. ;)

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

^^

I remember the movie book for Star Trek VI (complete with movie synopsis) was released around the same time of the movie premier. So, the big Valeris reveal wasn't really a surprise at the time.

The funny thing is: Based on the initial trailer, I actually thought Kirk was going to die in that film. (It turned out to be the shape-shifter, Martia). So, it was an interesting surprise - for me - when Kirk managed to live until the end.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Yeah, the trailer shot where Martia-Kirk is vaporized fooled more than a few of the fans. In retrospect it would have been extremely unlikely for the producers to ever reveal the death of Captain Kirk in a trailer - but then again, this is the same studio that spoiled the destructions of both the original Enterprise and the Enterprise-D in trailers for The Search for Spock and Generations.

That one Star Trek III trailer even went so far as to proclaim that film "the final voyage of the starship Enterprise" or some words along those lines.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I just hope the movie is dark and creepy. You don't name something "The Phantom Menace" and then make half your movie about pod racing. "The Ancient Fear" warrants creepiness.

I cannot think of a, "creepy," sci-fi movie Disney has made since the Black Hole. And sorry, Tron wasn't creepy.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I'd settle for something rich and moody like Empire. Although I know with JJ it's likely to be quite a bit more fun and flashy than that.

Why are you sorry? Tron wasn't intended to be "creepy".

This is taking me way back, but when the original Tron trailer screened before Annie, it creeped me out. (Of course, I was about 7 years old). However, when I saw Tron on videodisc, I was awed - even though Clu's death screams affected me - and introduced to the awesomeness of Journey.;)

I saw The Black Hole when I was about 12 or 13, and that film did creep me out when I first saw it. The fact that Disney allowed a robot to drill into Anthony Perkins was interesting. (Amazing also was how everything was implicated, rather than shown). Not too mention, the dead zombie crew...and John Barry's theme...and that ending with Maximillian (the robot) and Maximillian (the actor, I forget the character's name) were fused and you see the eyes dart back and forth.

In regards to Star Wars, I wouldn't mind a darker movie. That's what we were promised for Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. And, we were robbed.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

If you think being scared by the trailer for Tron is bad, I can top that. I was around seven when E.T. came out, and I was scared by that trailer.

Part of the challenge for JJ and to a greater degree I'd imagine for Disney executives is how do you make a sequel to Star Wars that isn't too light but just enough, "dark," to be interesting to older viewers while simultaneously making a story that will attract a younger audience that parents will take their children to.

No doubt, part of the payback equation in Disney executive's eyes in this investment is to create a whole plethora of new characters for merchandizing and to create rides for their theme parks as well as characters that will tantalize younger children as well as older adults for decades.

As an example it's doubtful that Emperor Paplatine would be an acceptable character for most of Disney's merchandizing line - unless I'm missing something? And he's as dark as you got in the last films. Any darker than him and it may spell trouble for some parents.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I guess what I'm really hoping for is almost a "Fellowship of the Ring" style story. Both Star Wars trilogies began with some kind of threat and ended with victory and celebration. I think Episode VII should do the opposite.

It's 30 years later. The Rebels won, and the Empire has been defeated. The galaxy has been enjoying a great time of peace and prosperity.

UNTIL AN ANCIENT EVIL AWAKENS AND THREATENS TO DESTROY THEM ALL.

Basically, by the end of Episode VII, I want to genuinely fear what's coming. I want to know that the galaxy is in peril. I don't want to have a random adventure that ends with a parade.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Other films in the "Star Wars Universe" but not labeled "Episode #" are planned, correct? Perhaps, and I hope it is so, we'll get those kind of story's there. A sort of 'EU' in film, and canon(?) form. :)

There are three films already confirmed in development that will be stand-alone. Thought to be origin stories, but still no real details out there.

This would be ideal. I do remember when Han was captured in ESB, I was truly worried about his fate. Same when Obiwan died, I was truly worried if Luke would not know what to do next. Of course we heard Obiwan's voice at the end of ANH, but there was still a mystery about it. When Quigon died, I felt bad for Obiwan, but I knew he would had Anakin to help him out in the next one. I doubt they will kill off Luke or Lea or possibly Han, but I want to be worried for them, perhaps Luke turns to the Dark side or is in serious peril. I definitely don't want to end with an all out victory, but I'm sure some kind of temporary victory will occur and we will be left with unanswered questions or a cliffhanger. Those things are inevitable, but I want some real danger.

For those worried about Fisher, I'm not worried about her voice or her acting abilities so much. I don't know if her acting abilities has fallen flat or not, but it can't be as bad as Hayden. I imagine these characters are a little war torn. It probably took quite a while to completely destroy the Empire. What I do wonder is if Fisher will be a force wielding Jedi, that I am concerned about. I doubt they will ignore it, so, I wonder how they will handle it. I also wonder if she can pull that off. I would imagine her as more a political leader, but who knows.

The other thing I wonder about is The clone Wars and Rebels. The Clones in ROTS, according to the Clone Wars, have a chip in their brain and were conditioned to follow the Emperor's orders. With that being said, if the Emperor is dead, does the chip become obsolete or does the conditioning remain? I know not all Clones became Stormtroopers and not all Stormtroopers became Clones, so I have to wonder if maybe the Rebel alliance got any help from former Clones that weren't apart of order 66 or that didn't become stormtroopers or their brainwashing simply "wore off"? Lastly, I wonder if we are going to get some kind of montage or back story to fill in the time gap? I would imagine the cloning facility being destroyed and Kominoians being tried for treason. I could see Stormtropers being rounded up and arrested and some kind of peace agreement formed. The senate would have to be restructured and the Jedi Temple restored. I'd like to see some kind of montage like that. I'm sure the opening crawl will give us something, but I want visuals like at the end of ROTS and ROTJ.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The teaser trailer will probably be

"A long time ago in a galaxy far far away"

STAR WARS

brief cuts of scenes like lightsabers and ships flying by

"Summer 2015"
I'll amend that slightly. After all that there's a black screen, and we hear a voice say "Master Luke?"

Then we see a man looking out a window at the stars. He says "There's a disturbance in the Force. I can feel it. An ancient evil."

He turns slightly and looks at the camera. It's Luke. Cue audience squees.

"It's coming," Luke says.

Black. Music. Trailer ends.
