Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

American moviegoing audiences weren't used to seeing Harrison Ford or Mark Hamill in films every year or so, but Mark was a soap opera actor and Harrison had been in American Graffiti. Also, there was Peter Cushing, a longtime cult horror film star known on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hardly "unknowns." More "hey, I've seen them a couple of places before."

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Alec Guinness certainly wasn't unknown. (100th birthday shout-out)

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I think the more accurate way to put it is that the main cast were relative unknowns (certainly not super-stars of their day) with a few well known veteran actors (Guinness & Cushing) in supporting roles. Probably not the most apt example, bit it's the same basic approach films like 'Starship Troopers' took.

Having said that, I'm not entirely sure how notable Cushing was at the time. Over here, sure, but just how familiar were American audiences with his Hammer Horror roles?

Remember, for better or worse this is a J.J. Abrams joint and that cat prides himself as being the master of the movie marketing mystery box.

Except for that whole "it's not Khan" fiasco.

Hey, I just says he prides himself on it. I never said he was actually good at it. ;)

Indeed, he has a track record of fumbling the pay-off.

Back in the 70's those Hammer horror films got a lot more airplay than they do these days, particularly on halloween nights. I recognized Peter when I first saw Star Wars at the tender age of 7. Though I didn't know his name. At the time in the U.S. he was more recognizable than Guinness.

I'm a huge Abrams fan, but his whole "mystery box method" things is just annoying. I can understand not wanting to give everything away, but plenty of movies have revealed information before the movies were released, and they still did fine. Look at the Marvel Movies. Sure they have kept somethings quite, but they do reveal stuff and it doesn't seem to have hurt them at all.

So, filming starts in Morocco. I guess that means we're going back to Tatooine in the new movie? If so, I'm a little disappointed. Unless they are doing something new and different with it? Maybe Luke established his Jedi academy there?

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Hell, a major Star Wars podcaster just this week said that he went into Episode I in the spring of 1999 knowing most of the major details of the movie right down to Qui-Gon's death. That was fifteen years ago and most of the beans about The Phantom Menace had been spilled before many of us ever got to the theater and bought our ticket.

I'm also a little surprised we don't know more about Episode VII with just a month to go until shooting starts, but I guess Disney and Abrams are being real sticklers for keeping things hush right now. Disney's notorious for their legal army.

I bought and read the script cover to cover the night before. Could. Not. Help. Myself.

I was just minding my own business at Barnes & Noble, when I stumbled upon a table display of those things.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I didn't know anything about what was going to happen in Episode I until my parents bought me the soundtrack. I was so pissed when I saw a song called "Qui-Gon's Noble End" on the tracklisting.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I remember having seen online concept art of Naboo fauna, among other things, prior to the release of TPM. Somewhere else there was an outline of most of the plot.

I read the entire comic adaptation of TESB before seeing the film. That was the peak of my self-spoilage.

You might be on to something there. Bring in the Borg as the new threat to the Wars universe. ;)

j/k

That's a terrible idea. Obviously, they should use Daleks instead.
Are you crazy? That would mean being beholden to The Terry Nation Estate :p

Actually, seeing Abrams try to keep up with the demands of the Nations Estate and keeping them pleased would be entertaining itself.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

...so what about Moffat to direct it then? :p

Master Luke Skywalker, in a Jedi classroom.
Luke: "The Force, contrary to popular belief is not a presence which guides you through everything in life. It is in fact more sort of a ... wibbly ... spacey ... magic ... type ... thing."
Jedi pupil: "Started off well, that sentence."
Luke: "It got away from me, yeah."

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Disney and Bad Robot are holding auditions for the lead roles in Star Wars this week at CalArts.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Not that much of a surprise, though with Peter Mayhew's knee surgery and mobility problems in recent years it did make the certainty of his return a little bit iffy. Glad to see things worked out.
