Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

When the actors are filming the scenes, they have no way knowing what the finished product will look like, so it has to be very exciting for them to see it for the first time.
Well I'm sure they can look at the dailies if they wish, but yeah, they have no idea what the film is going to look like edited together. Or with something that is FX-heavy.

That's right - which is why I said "finished product." I wonder how silly they must feel when they are dancing around in front of a green screen with little tracking balls glued to their costume.

I've seen some complaints that the tone of the trailer is too serious. Too reverent. I think that's a great thing. For one, I think it shows a perfect idea of fandom. We do look at the OT as our legends, sometimes perhaps a little too reverently. Plus, if the idea is that our knowledge of OT has fallen into myth, and these people want to be free and want more, then why wouldn't the characters show such reverence as well?

You know what people? Star Wars is a masterpiece. It deserves a little reverence. People should take off their shoes when they watch it because they are standing on Holy Ground.

^^What's interesting also in the story is movies theaters have the ability to ad showings as they sell out. Theoretically, a single theater may show Star Wars and virtually nothing else that weekend.

Any bets on if this film passes Avatar as the biggest movie ever within a month?

If you are obsessive and want to look at every screen shot here you are.

Here's a random thought - we assume that the final shots of the trailer are of Finn and Kylo duking it out samuarai style. But what if Finn turns on the lightsaber to see who's approaching him in the dark, discovers its Kylo, and as you can see from the last screenshot is terrified when Kylo turns on his blade? Maybe it isn't a duel as much as it is a slaughter?

Earlier we see Rey crying over the body of someone who is wearing a tan jacket very similar in color to Finns... and later we see her seem to lose her temper and start shooting someone in anger.

What if Rey is Luke's daughter and Finn's death is what causes her to accept the Force?

I'm doubtful.

They were casting for the lead female in Episode VIII last month, and the actresses were doing chemistry reads against Boyega. That suggests that Finn will be back, but Rey may not.

Ok
If that's the case, then I would wager its Han that is dead. I honestly think that I would rather see him die than Rey. The world needs more Daisy Ridley.

My other thought was that the "robot hand" might be Luke holding Artoo back because he is secretly observing Kylo and the Sithstreet Boys tear up the settlement, and he doesn't want anyone to detect them. Maybe he then connects with Rey on Jakku and gives her his father's old lightsaber. Or could it be that the lightsaber itself is what Kylo is trying to collect? JJ did say that the First Order are a bit neo-Nazish. The lightsaber of Darth Vader would have great significance for a man who has Vader's melted helmet.

They've been able to do that as far back as 1999. I remember asking the person who sold me my ticket to Phantom Menace how they would handle selling out. The response was simply: "We open another screening."

Any bets on if this film passes Avatar as the biggest movie ever within a month?

Domestically or worldwide?

It's difficult to use early sales as a gauge. We know there is a strong and somewhat large core group of Star Wars nuts out there, and I would wager that all the sales were by them or by automated programs trying to resell choice tickets to them. What will make this film the "biggest" ever is

1) Normal people going to the theater or even better ponying up for IMAX tickets

2) Fans rewatching the film multiple times

3) A long run in the theaters. Considering that January and February aren't known for blockbuster film releases, I can see this film staying in theaters for a lot longer than normal, which will be crucial in capturing that 'Meh, i don't care much about this sort of thing, but my co-workers keep blabbing on about it, so I'll take a look' crowd late in the run.

Well we see Poe wearing that same jacket, so it could also be him she's crying over.

True, but it appears as if Poe is in the battle over the Icy planet with the inexplicable trench, so I would think that battle would be the climatic one.

Of course it seems like everyone in the film is wearing brown leather, so it could be anybody, maybe even some random gent that tipped his hat to Rey on Sundays.

This is Yavin. It has to be. Han and Fin must have went there looking for Luke.
Actually it seems to that that is Maz Kanata's Palace. I'm thinking the flags are probably trophies from all the planets her and her crew have raided.
To be fair, there's a whole generation of those girls that look the same.

For me, she's basically a slightly younger version of Natalie Portman ........ which was kinda on purpose.........
Yeah, it's actually Daisy Ridley's overall look more than anything else that makes me think she's part of the Solo Skywalker family. I could easily see her being related to Leia and Padme without a moment's doubt.

I have admit the idea of the Jedi and all of the becoming barely believed stories is growing on me. I have to admit, I always figured that everybody knew about Luke and the Jedi, but he was just one guy who was only out in the galaxy for a handful of years before he apparently disappeared. So it wouldn't be hard to believe that people who didn't see what he did first hand would just blow it off. With the Jedi in general, it'll have been decades since Order 66 so anybody who is still alive that saw Jedi first hand could easily be written off as crazy old people. Not to mention that there's probably been tons of anti-Jedi propaganda from the First Order in that time too.

Io9 posted their analysis of the trailer.

I have to admit, after seeing them everywhere I'm already kind of starting to get kind of attached to Rey and Finn, and to like Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, so I'm going to be disappointed if they aren't in all three of the main saga movies.

EDIT: This is kind cool, IGN has edited footage from all three trailers into what they believe is chronological order.

I could totally buy Daisy Ridley's character as being the granddaughter of Padmé Amidala. They're not lookalikes, but there are strong similarities and she does have that Skywalker vibe to her because of the facial resemblance.

Somehow, I'm convinced that the only shot of Luke sofar, with him touching R2, will literally be the last shot of the movie. Remember the trailer for Winter Soldier, when it turned out that something that felt could be in the middle of the film, turned out to be the last scene, and actually one line more? The entire "When do we start? We just did." Literally the last scene, and the last sentence was cut from the movie.

Somehow, I get the same vibe here.

Anyway..... What a trailer!!!! Showed us so much, yet so little. Still nothing about the actual plot. Kinda bugs me, but also means hardly any spoilers about actual events.

Personally I hope Rey and Finn aren't related to anybody we know from the OT, and that the fact their last names have been withheld so far is nothing but a misdirect. I'd much prefer they simply be a couple of random "lost souls" without any purpose who suddenly get caught up in this great adventure and rise to greatness all on their own.
