Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

IG-88 is pretty close to being my favorite non-speaking character in the OT. He had amazing presence. Pretty scary.

I drew a complete and total blank at the mention of this character, I went and Googled it and am still drawing a blank.

I'm guessing he is one of the Bounty Hunters, Vader summons to the Star Destroyer?

That's him. He gets a bit more attention in one of the short story novels (Tales of the Bounty hunters if I recall correctly)

WTF?!?!

:wtf:

On a side note - When you see the junk room on Cloud City where Chewie finds 3PO, you can see IG-88 propped up in the back. When we were kids we made up a story that he had got to CC first but had been ambushed by Boba Fett and that's where he ended up.

I've always felt the Cloud City ice cream maker guy was up to something.
He got his own action figure!

He's a droid that stands there. That's all you really need to know ;)

IG-88 made quite a few appearances in Legends material over the years.
He's another one of the SW characters who's incredibly popular even though he only appeared in one scene for a few seconds, and didn't speak a word.

"Tales of the Bounty Hunters" is about as fanwank as you can get.

Now that's romance and passion most of us can only dream about.

Dengar: "Hello, darling. Looks like we're securing the back platform together."
Ventress: "Wonderful."

Even since I first saw TESB at the age of ten in 1980, I was always a bit confused and concerned that the unseen shooter that blasts Threepio on Cloud City sounded an AWFUL lot like Yoda!

DAVID BRIN WAS RIGHT??? :wah:

Certainly not when you have genius ideas like midichlorians, Ahsoka, Darth Maul coming back from the dead with Savage Oppress and the Vong.

The only one of those things I didn't like was the midichlorians. I love Ahsoka, I thought Maul and his brother were great villains and gave us some great TCW episodes, and I thought the Vong were pretty cool villains in the first 4 New Jedi Order books.

EDIT: I don't think anyone posted this yet. IGN has a story about a new set of trading cards for TFA which includes group alignments for the new characters. This stuff could be seen as spoilers, so if you don't want spoilers you'll probably want to avoid the link.
They have Rey labled as a Jedi and Rebel, Finn as a Rebel, and Kylo Ren as a Sith.
Since we already know the characters aren't Rebels or Sith I'm assuming they're just using the same terms for all of the movies, with Rebel=Resistance member and Sith=Knight of Ren.
It is still interesting that Finn isn't labled as a Jedi even though we've seen him with a lightsaber, and Rey is even though we've seen no signs of her being one. I'm wondering if maybe Finn starts training in this movie, but isn't a full fledged Jedi at the end. If Rey is in in fact a Solo/Skywalker who turned her back on her family, then I could see her having been trained as a Jedi even if she isn't acting as one when we first see her.

EDIT 2: The official Star Wars website has a preview of a bunch of new TFA related books coming out on 12-18, with covers and descriptions for each.
*The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - a making of book.
*Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary - A guide to the character, locations, technology, ect. in the movie.
*Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Ultimate Sticker Collection - pretty self explanatory.
*Star Wars: Before the Awakening by Greg Rucka - a collection of short stories focused on Poe, Rey, and Finn before TFA. The cover is done in the same style as the ones on the Luke, Leia, and Han middle grade books that came out on Force Friday.
*Star Wars: Rey Meets BB-8 (Level 1 Reader) - A kids book about Rey and BB-8. It sounds to me like this will probably be an adaptation of scenes from the movie.
*Star Wars: Finn and Rey Escape (8x8 w/stickers) - Not sure exactly what this is, but it appears to be a story book adapating scenes from the movie....with stickers in it.
*Star Wars: Han and Chewie Return (8x8) - Appears to be similar to the two above.
*Star Wars: Five Minute Stories - A collection of stories that you should be able to read in five minutes, with stories focused on Yoda, Luke, and Rey. It sounds like they're adapting scenes from the movies.
*Star Wars: The Force Awakens Flashlight Adventure Book - The description talks about exploring the planet Jakku with a packed in flashlight that makes sounds from the movie.
*SW:TFA: Lightsaber Rescue - Tells the story of the movie with a "non-removable lightsaber module" that makes six sounds. It's like the old story books with the buttons on the side that make noises.
*SW:TFA Mix and Match - It includes fold outs that apparently allow you to mix and match characters body parts, with "spectacular action". It lists Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, Rey and Finn as featured characters.
*Rey's Survival Guide - A guide for surviving a Jakku. This could be kind of fun depending on how interesting Jakku actually is.

At the end is a list of titles of other books coming out on 12/18, but without covers or descriptions:
*Star Wars: Finn and The First Order
*Star Wars: Look and Find
*SW: TFA: Incredible Cross-Sections
*SW: TFA New Adventures
*SW: TFA Adult Novelization
*SW: TFA Junior Novelization

The Art of... and The Visual Dictionary are ones I'm might get if I find them as E-books, but as long as I like the movie as much as I expect to then I will almost certainly be getting Before the Awakening.

Kid, I've been from one side of Star Wars fandom to the other. I've seen a lot of strange stuff. But until today I'd never seen....that.

I had no idea who Willrow Hood was, so I looked him up on Wookiepedia. The dude was literally just seen running down a hall, and he has a 2 paragraph introduction, 7 paragraph long biography, and 2 paragraphs on his personality and traits. How the hell is that even possible?
Star Wars fandom amazes me.
EDIT: Holy shit, the dude actually has an action figure. SERIOUSLY?!

I said that. It was a fan voted pick. It was quite, um, random, even for Star Wars merchandise.

Also, mid-clorians are considered fan-wank? Personally, I think that was a random story choice to make Anakin sound more messianic and uber-Jedi, qualities that did not endear him to me.

Also, I cannot stand the Vong.

I thought the Vong were fine, the NJO series was just too long, and they don't really have the same impact 20 books in.

Interesting Yuuzhan Fun Fact: Vong was the name of a restaurant that a bunch of suits over at Del Rey used to eat at and Yuuzhan more or less came off the tea menu.

Who the hell thought up that crap; Verbal Kint?

I didn't mind the design of the Yuuzhan Vong as a species, but they were just written and used so poorly that it was hard for me to care about them outside of a couple of individual characters. Much of that era of the old EU was full of stupid ideas or good concepts that were just incompetently executed, resulting in the post-Jedi mess of events and characters that many fans grew increasingly annoyed by.

i've been trying to read those Vong novels on and off for something like 20 years now. i'm only halfway through. some of them are very tedious.
