Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

I'm particularly dying to see how they treat Luke after ROTJ, because I was really disappointed with the way Truce at Bakura glossed over it.

As I understand it, Bantam had another immediate-post-RotJ book in development that, for whatever reason, never worked out. Perhaps that book would have gone into those details?

I haven't read Bakura in over twenty years, so I have no great memory of it. The vague impression I have, searching backward through my memories, is that it was just there.

On the other hand, I can still summon up the revulsion I felt from Vonda McIntyre's The Crystal Star. And the "This is so, so bad" from KJA's Darksaber. It's easier to remember things that are really bad or really good than the vast majority of things that are merely adequate.

I'm particularly dying to see how they treat Luke after ROTJ, because I was really disappointed with the way Truce at Bakura glossed over it. He just redeemed his father and watched him die, got electrocuted by the Emperor and watched him die, the Rebels just won, he's been named the one man responsible for bringing back the Jedi... what's going through his head?

And Leia is finally with Han and she just learned she's a Jedi and she just learned Vader is her father. What's going on with her?

Anakin appears to Leia as a Force ghost and she flips out at him - I thought that was well handled.

The mission was also Luke's first command - it convinces him he doesn't want a military career anymore. I thought it was addressed well.

YMMV, of course.

Do you think there is any possibility that Thrawn could show up in any of the new movies coming out?

I read an absurd article yesterday that suggested Benicio del Toro will be Thrawn in Episode VIII.

I'd really doubt that.

Some fans believe an unnamed Imperial Fleet Admiral in the epilogue of Aftermath is Thrawn.

Noise is made in Aftermath about the Imperials exploring what are basically the Unknown Regions.

I read Tarkin recently and noticed a few things from the Legends EU that popped up in the narative
including the deployment of those hyperspace stopping ships (indicators) sp. Although the Death Star wasn't developed at the Maw
? and arn't we meant to be in Rebels
visiting Kessl and seeing the Spiders that make Spice?

So it seems that Disney are continuing to cherry pick from Legends for the new continuity and if that Spoiler that Allyn just said, I think that would be bloody cool.

Shattered #1 disappointed me. About half of it was reshowing the events of ROTJ, and then we basically have Han in the background and that's it. I thought this was the comic that was going to show the Big Three because they're apparently not in Aftermath? Why won't they show what the main characters are doing after ROTJ?

The art was gorgeous though and I look forward to what comes next!

Yeah so far it seems like they're really trying to dance around showing us anything truly meaningful with regard to the big three after ROTJ. Instead they're either in the background or going on minor missions to destroy a few Imperial holdouts here and there (which is pretty much what we would have expected to happen anyway).

Surely we could get a bit more insight into what they're thinking and feeling post-ROTJ, without it spoiling events in TFA 30 years later.

And while the idea of the new characters is cool, I can't help but be distracted by the fact they look more like the perfectly chiseled characters in a superhero comic than a SW movie.

The First Order is the Empire of the Hand.

I really hope they don't use Thrawn. He was already great, and can't be improved. Disney should just leave him alone. Unless Zahn does a new canon SW book, I'd prefer his two big characters (Trawn and Mara Jade) just stay Legends. I'm excited for the new movies, and liked the new books I've read, but some things should just be left alone.

Of course, Disney can do whatever they want, i'm just saying what I wish would happen.

Yeah, leave Thrawn out of it. Mara Jade would be a nice addition, but no Thrawn.

Mara Jade is basically my favorite character in the entire SW franchise, including movie characters. I'd prefer she just never shows up in the new canon. She had a great run (with a stupid ending) in the old EU, no one is going to top it, and I'd rather not take the chance of her getting screwed up.

I'm shocked but I feel exactly the same. Mara is my fav and the only way they could ever do her justice would be to turn Zahn's books into movies.
This isn't gonna happen so I'll pass.

I'd hate to risk them ruining the character like Game of Thrones ruined Asha Greyjoy and Arianne Martell.

If they ever decide to bring Mara Jade from the old EU into one of the new movies they'd better do some seriously thoughtful casting calls for her character. Not just any redheaded actress could pull off the personality and gravitas that Mara had in the Expanded Universe and if they do indeed use her at some point she has to be much more than just a barely-used supporting character used for fanwank to appease the dedicated, classic EU fanbase.

I finished up Shattered Empire last night and I really enjoyed it. It was mostly just an introduction to the new characters, Shara Bey and her husband Kes ( since somebody mentioned just a couple posts back, I guess it isn't a spoiler) Dameron. The dialogue was well written, and I really liked the art. I was actually kind of surprised that Han and Chewie were in it as much as they were. I was expecting maybe a page or two or even just a couple of panels, so I was pleasantly surprised when they were pretty prominent in the last few pages. Lando also a cameo.

I received Aftermath today at work (along with Shattered Empire and the four YA books).

I went right to the Epilogue and read his appearance. I can sort of see Thrawn in the nameless character, but he seems a little too sinister. I suspect the character was described vaguely enough so that older fans would think it's Thrawn, but when we actually find out who he is in the second or third book, he will turn out to be as far away from Thrawn as possible.

My guess, frankly, without having read the book, is that the mysterious Fleet Admiral is Andy Sirkis' character in The Force Awakens. So I'm undoubtedly completely wrong. :)
