Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

You know it's awesome when the logpile and the giant swinging trees take down walkers.

Besides, it was either that or do it with Wookies.

Which we did sort of get in ROTS, for about two seconds :( What's even worse is that we don't see Chewbacca do anything at all except run and put Yoda in an escape pod (There was supposed to be a scene where Chewie and Yoda would take on one of those Walkers searching for them, but that was cut. Yoda would do the eccentric swamp creature bit from ESB while Chewie and the other Wookie would jump on the Walker and pull off the distracted pilots).

Chewbacca and Tarfful definitely didn't get enough screentime in ROTS. They appear, all the other Wookiees do the fighting for a couple of minutes and then you don't see them again until Yoda narrowly survives Order 66 and Chewie and the General then take him to safety and his escape pod. I know Episode III couldn't turn into the Chewbacca Action Show but we barely got to see him (or any of the other Wookiees) do what they do best before the whole Kashyyyk sequence of the film is over.

Imagine if, instead of giving us this cool-looking, but ultimately completely meaningless battle on Kashyyk prior to Order 66, George decided to use the Wookie homeworld as the stage for Jedi's final stand against the Imperial Clones?

Could have been epic, just think about it... Thousands of troopers charging at the Jedi from the sea, air and ground, the Jedi and the Wookies fighting them off 300 style, defeating them just barely, bodies all over the place... Then they get bombarded from orbit, fade to black, bye bye Jedi order.

*sigh*

Isn't that the opening to Firefly? ;)

I love ROTJ, but it does still feel a bit wrong that it wasn't Han taking part in that epic space battle at the end, and flying the Falcon into the middle of the Death Star. The action taking place down on Endor, while entertaining, just wasn't nearly as cool or memorable.

The good thing is we're likely to see an awful LOT of Han flying the Falcon and doing all kinds of cool and crazy things with it in the new movie (at least judging from the trailers and the few spoilers I've read).

That does bring up a good question: will Han die in VII. Supposedly the screenwriter for ROTJ and Ford wanted to kill him off. And currently they are both on this project.

It could be logical for Han to die if his story is over. He's supposedly fathered the next generation, and the film would give him a chance to pass the Falcon on and the rogue role to the next generation.

On the other hand, Han could stay for another film, because Solo is a nice role.

And Harrison hasn't had many good film projects in the past fifteen years. At all. His biggest 21st century hit up to now is the most controversial and (on average) the most disliked movie in the Indiana Jones franchise.

If he decides to leave the role of Han Solo after The Force Awakens and wants Han to be killed off that's certainly his decision and up to both he and the filmmakers, but sticking around until at least Episode VIII would put him back on top of the world and be incredibly lucrative for his career in his later years.

Ford is a little old to be leading the battle on the planet at this stage, so I bet you're right.

Is it? I've seen that pilot twice, and barely remember any of it.

The opening battle in the pilot is a big battle where the Browncoats end up making a last stand.

It was partial sarcasm, but that was the first thing to pop in to my mind when you described it. I think it could work very well, and be a whole lot nicer than random Jedi getting slaughtered individually.

Having him in the cockpit suits me just find.

The Wookiees working alongside the surviving Jedi and making a last stand against the Republic/Empire would have been a neat way to explain why Kashyyyk became a target of Imperial animosity and why the Empire forced many Wookiees into slavery, outside of random racism.

They sort of did that in the games and novels that followed ROTS. I imagine there wasn't time for that in the movie. Order 66 had to look more or less final for the Jedi except for Kenobi and Yoda. Yoda couldn't be there for a last stand as he was needed elsewhere. In later stories, they have first the Wookiees having fought the Clones in the aftermath of the Droid Armies shutting down over the Clones murdering Jedi and killing Wookiee witnesses. Later surviving Jedi regroup on Kashyyyk and were hunted down by the new Stormtroopers and Darth Vader. It was after this second time that the planet was more or less locked down. That and the Death Star needed strong slave labor. I guess people were a little wary of large numbers of big strong droids in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, give the billions of battle droids involved in each region.

As for going with Ewoks rather than Wookiees? Probaby because of the Holiday Special. After that Kashyyyk and the Wookiees are just not primative enough to present the nature defeats technology angle of the story (or the local primatives defeat the technological empire model).

The Wookies helping to overthrow the Empire at the end of ROTJ just wouldn't have had nearly the same impact, given that even without technology they were pretty damn intimidating and could easily kick the Stormtrooper's asses (as we saw with how easily Chewie was able to toss them around). So that idea just never made much sense to me.

No doubt the Ewoks were made a helluva lot cuter and cuddlier than they should have been, but I still think they provided for a much better underdog against the Empire than the big and fearsome Wookies.

Temple of Doom came out in the 80s so 20th century :p

Well if it helps the whole eating people who were cooked alive thing probably detracts from the cute and cuddly thing.

Also makes you wonder what happened to the captured Imperial troops

I'd just like to remind everyone that the Ewoks threw a helluva party after the Rebel Alliance won the day. They likely served lots of food to all the attending Rebels, if you catch my drift.
