I'd rather see the Empire done away with entirely. The Galactic Empire itself only existed for 20-odd years anyway, so why would it still be a thing more than 20 years later? As a political institution it was centered around Palpatine personally, and I do not see it surviving past him, unless Leia or Mon Mothma took over as an Empress and kept the power structure intact.
Well he dissolved the senate and ruled for a while pretty much entirely through fear without even the pretense of lower democracy. The systems had very little to unite them other than the threat of force. The Empire fracturing would have been natural at that point, with the most powerful military commanders likely taking ownership of various territories already under their control, much like often happened when empires fell in our own history. Then, as also often happened, one or another becomes strong enough to start taking over the others and a new Empire is born. in this case it would be "The First Order."

I'm going to reserve any conclusions until AFTER I've seen the film.
Although I'm very wary of him doing Star Wars. He really did NOT get Trek, so I'm not entirely sure that he'll get Wars.
Except for the internet nerd rage type.

I don't mind the switch to calling them the First Order and Resistance from a storytelling standpoint, although Rebels to Resistance seems needlessly change-y, unless it signifies that the Rebellion has become a fully-fledged New Republic-style government in their own right and the Resistance is a separate but allied group still fighting the First Order government which controls it's own section of the galaxy like the Imperial Remnant.
But I can't tell you how many times I've been talking about the new movie and I can't stop myself from calling the factions the Empire and Rebels. It's gonna take a while to get 38 years of calling them that out of my head. I'm sure I'll get used to it as we see it used in more trailer and TV spots, though.

Isn't this basically the case?
That the First Order is only a splinter or remnant of the Empire and the Resistance is basically just operating there while the Alliance has become a successor state to the Old Republic
Same here, man. Old school fans are going to take a long time to adjust to the name changes for the protagonists and antagonists in the film franchise and I have yet to successfully call the Imperial remnants the First Order without then referring to them as "the Empire" or "Imperials" soon thereafter.

JJ Abrams the guy who did Lost and the last two Star Trek movies.
I don't make assumptions on movies based on a trailer.
I'm guessing you weren't much of a fan of the last two Trek films. To each their own, but any perceived failure of J.J. to execute the Trek universe on the big screen doesn't necessarily translate into him failing to get Star Wars right.
He's on record as a bigger and much more vocal Star Wars fan, anyways, so I don't think he'll be undermining the Saga with too much wild experimentation that risks hurting the film. Based on the two teaser trailers it looks like he may have recaptured the feel of the OT that even George Lucas couldn't accomplish most of the time when making the PT.

I am aware of who Abrams is and who you are referring too. I am just confused as to what your point is beyond reserving judgement.
I mean, I understand if Abrams Trek was not for you and the opinion that he does not get Trek. I don't need to drag that in to this Star Wars thread.
However, Abrams is a self-confessed fan of Star Wars and seems far more determined to bring a sense of style akin to the Original Trilogy than even GL did with the PT. I'm making no assumptions based on the trailer (they will likely be wrong anyway) but am assuming based upon what I know of Abrams and the BTS direction.
So, I guess my confusion is why conclude that Abrams doesn't understand Star Wars?

However, Abrams is a self-confessed fan of Star Wars and seems far more determined to bring a sense of style akin to the Original Trilogy than even GL did with the PT. I'm making no assumptions based on the trailer (they will likely be wrong anyway) but am assuming based upon what I know of Abrams and the BTS direction.

With his Star Trek movies, he really hasn't presented us with anything completely new or different, and Into Darkness was a poor attempt at capturing the feel of The Wrath of Khan, at least to me.
Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to be insulting about his movies and they weren't terrible movies at all, I just have a certain way that I like my Star Trek, and to me he just didn't capture that feeling.
And I'm sorry if this sounded like a complaint, I really was not trying to bash him, just express my opinion.

I can understand that point of view. My point is that Abrams may get SW better than Trek.
Personally, and in my opinion, Abrams did a fine job with Trek, capturing the essence of adventure present in TOS. Obviously, your mileage may vary.
Secondly, Abrams is not the only one steering the SW ship. Disney and Kathleen Kennedy have a very real interest in maintaining the quality of the film.
Finally, I do agree that I'll wait until the film to draw any conclusions. But, I also enjoy speculating.
Not movie related, but Fantasy Flight Games (which makes the X-Wing Miniatures game) is set to release a brand new Imperial corvette soon. I want one. 
Looks good from the trailers, hope this improves over the disappointing last movies although part 3 was decent.
I love that this has old and new characters back and Chewbecca has aged well, i think Wookies are immortal from the looks of it.
I also hope Disney/Fox has sense to release the original unbutchered and unedited theatrical cuts of the original trilogy on bluray out of the Lucasfilm vaults that has been sitting there for 20 years and now that Lucas is no longer in control of the studio he once owned.
